Bilawal Bhutto and S. Jaishankar squared off at the UN. Who sounded more impressive?
Transcript
00:00When it comes to the question of Kashmir, prove that multilateralism can succeed.
00:06Nor can hosting Osama bin Laden and attacking a neighbouring parliament
00:10serve as credentials to sermonise before this council.
00:30The UN General Assembly, the most universal global forum, must play a central role in
00:45reinforcing multilateralism and enhancing equity and justice in international relations.
00:53The world's attention must also turn away from pursuing narrow national ambitions and
01:05face collectively, multilaterally, first and foremost, the existential threats that we
01:16face as the human race, be it in the shape of the COVID pandemic, be it in the form of climate
01:28catastrophe and climate change, or the issues of nuclear, the nuclear threat, terrorism, extremism.
01:42We are obviously focused today on the urgency of reforming multilateralism. We will naturally
01:48have our particular views, but there is an ongrowing convergence, at least,
01:53that this cannot be delayed any further.
01:55There is an agenda, an agenda item left unaddressed, Madam President, that we believe
02:04is a multilateral agenda. It is an agenda of this UN Security Council. If we want to see the
02:13success of multilateral institutions, the success of multilateralism, the success of this very
02:19council, then surely you can aid in this process and allow for the implementation of UN Security
02:26Council resolutions when it comes to the question of Kashmir. Prove that multilateralism can succeed.
02:35Prove that the United Nations Security Council, under your worthy presidency, can succeed and
02:42deliver peace in our region.
02:44The credibility of the UN depends on its effective response to the key challenges of our times,
02:49be it pandemics, climate change, conflicts or terrorism. While we search for the best solutions,
02:56what our discourse must never accept is the normalisation of such threats.
03:02The question of justifying what the world regards as unacceptable should not even arise.
03:09That certainly applies to state sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. Nor can hosting
03:16Osama bin Laden and attacking a neighbouring parliament serve as credentials to sermonise
03:22before this council.
