I just need 10 seconds to set it up.
00:02
Check it.
00:03
Is the voice okay?
00:04
Voice is okay?
00:06
Roll.
00:07
Mr. Union Minister, Ashwini Vaishnav, welcome to Brood.
00:11
Can you simplify semiconductors for us today?
00:13
Like a potato is cut into small, fine slices to make wafers, chip of this size and complexity
00:21
will be having something like 70-80 kilometers of wiring.
00:25
Hi, I am Ashwini Vaishnav, recording this interview for Brood.
00:29
Can I get a wafer?
00:31
Yeah, thank you.
00:32
See, the chip industry starts with something called a wafer.
00:38
Like a potato is cut into small, fine slices to make wafers, silicon, large logs made of
00:48
silicon, they are cut into slices to make a wafer like this.
00:54
On the wafer, chips have to be etched.
01:09
So like suppose you take the case of let us say silver work or gold work, very fine
01:16
work has to be done on gold or let us take the case of a very fine, very fine painting.
01:23
So similarly, using very fine things like plasma and laser, those kind of things, chips
01:31
are designed on the top of the wafer.
01:34
Then again using a very complex process, each of the chip is taken out of the wafer.
01:41
Then this needs a body because there is lot of power supply, lot of wiring has to be done.
01:47
That body and the power supply, the strength has to be given by a different process.
01:54
I will show you.
01:55
Can I have this?
01:56
Now, this is the chip.
01:59
This chip will be having something which was taken out of this wafer.
02:03
From the wafer, very small little tiny thing is taken out.
02:07
Then it is given a complete body.
02:12
Sometimes you would be surprised, a chip of this size will be having kilometers of wiring
02:17
in it.
02:18
If you take a 5 or 6 storey building, 5 or 6, imagine a 5 storey building or a 10 storey
02:25
building, that 10 storey building will have multiple connections, staircase, lift going
02:32
up and down, then electricity, plumbing.
02:37
This particular chip will be having about 5 floors of chip inside it.
02:42
Most of this will be produced in India.
02:44
Ok, semiconductors are being made in India.
02:46
Now what is in it?
02:47
For me, you know, what is it going to do for me?
02:49
Let's say it's a boy sitting in Kashmir playing any video game.
02:55
For example, mobile phones, laptops, iPads, other tablets, train sets, automobiles, cars.
03:05
Wherever chips are used, today they are imported.
03:09
So now when we make them in India, the cost will be lower.
03:12
The youth will get more opportunities now.
03:16
Once you have the semiconductor industry, you can feed into downstream industries like
03:20
electronics, like telecom equipment, like your automobile industry gets activated, like
03:27
your train set manufacturing gets activated.
03:30
All those industries get the benefit of having a semiconductor industry in the country.
03:36
So jobs will be created in all those sectors.
03:38
Indian Minister Jai Shankar had also said this is of strategic importance.
03:44
How soon, you know, can we position ourselves as an alternator to China?
03:49
Listen, this industry is going to grow rapidly.
03:52
Today it is about 650 billion dollars globally, I'm saying.
03:58
Coming six years, seven years, this industry will double, more than a trillion dollars.
04:04
That's the kind of growth which is happening in this industry.
04:08
And this is absolutely the right time for India to capture a large part of this industry.
04:15
And the world today trusts India, our foreign policy is trusted today.
04:19
The way we conduct ourselves in the world, it is trusted today.
04:22
We are a large democracy.
04:24
We have a very open and transparent policy structure.
04:28
So the world wants to come and manufacture here.
04:31
So I can clearly see that in the coming five years, India will emerge as a major semiconductor
04:37
manufacturer and a very important trusted partner for large parts of the world.
