California battered by days of rain

A state of emergency has been declared as consistent rain continues to batter California. #news

00:09Officials in California have issued evacuation orders as rain causes widespread flooding,

00:13swelling rivers, and mudslides.

00:16At least 12 people have died in the extreme weather since the string of storms started in December.

00:21This weather event is called an atmospheric river, due to a long, narrow section in the atmosphere

00:26like a river in the sky that transports water vapor from the tropics and dumps it on land when the water vapor cools.

00:32Yesterday, 90% of the state's population was under a flood watch,

00:36and up to 232,000 homes and businesses are still without electricity.

00:41Some parts of California are expected to get up to 7 more inches of rain by tomorrow.
