Tropical Storm Hilary slams Southwest U.S.

Tropical Storm Hilary has battered California with heavy rain and catastrophic floods.

00:00Parts of Southern California and the Southwestern United States faced the threat of flash flooding,

00:05landslides, and mudslides after Tropical Storm Hillary brought record-breaking downpours to

00:09the region. Nearly 17 million Americans were under flood and high wind advisories as the storm moved

00:15north from the California-Mexico border to Las Vegas and parts of the Northwest. As California

00:19prepared for the storm on Sunday, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit north of Los Angeles. California

00:25Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California

00:29and President Joe Biden ordered federal agencies to move personnel and supplies into the region.

00:34Hillary was the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years. One of the

00:39most affected areas was Palm Springs, California, which experienced flooded streets, debris flows,

00:44and a knocked out 911 emergency system. Many areas still experienced steady rain

00:49on Monday morning, but Hillary has since been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.
