00:00The Respect for Marriage Act just passed a huge milestone in the U.S. Senate.

00:03All 50 Democratic Senators as well as 12 Republican Senators voted to advance a bill

00:08that would create a federal recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages.

00:12If the bill passes in the Senate, it will need to be passed in the House before reaching President

00:16Joe Biden's desk. The bill is especially significant as advocates fear the Supreme

00:20Court will overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 case that legalized same-sex marriage.

00:26The bill would codify that SCOTUS decision.

00:29It wouldn't set a national requirement that states legalize same-sex marriage,

00:33but it would require all states to recognize legal marriages from other states for purposes

00:38such as Medicare and Social Security. The bill is drawing support from unlikely places,

00:43including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has historically

00:46been anti-LGBTQ+. A total of 37 Senators voted against the bill, including Sen. Mitch McConnell,

00:53Sen. Marco Rubio, and Sen. Lindsey Graham.
