Ecuadoreans rally for reforestation following wildfire

Following a series of wildfires in Quito, authorities launched an initiative aimed at reforestation and preservation of green spaces.

Nearly 600 volunteers took to the El Panecillo hill, one of the affected sites, where with shovels, hoes and other tools, they planted nearly 1,000 native plants selected by the Secretariat of the Environment, according to a government statement.

According to Quito's Secretary of Environment, Santiago Sandoval, 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) were affected by the 2024 fires and 20,000 trees are to be planted in different parts of the city during the weekend with the help of 6,000 volunteers.

The reforestation campaign will run until 2025.
