Road accidents in EU claim over 20,000 lives in 2022 as fatalities rise

Regions in Portugal, Greece, and Romania reported the highest fatality rates. While EU-wide road deaths rose by about 9% between 2020 and 2022, the long-term trend offers hope.

00:00The latest Eurostat data says road fatalities are on the rise.

00:10In 2022, almost 21,000 people died in the EU due to a road accident,

00:18pedestrians, drivers and passengers included.

00:22That's the highest number since 2020, with a 9% increase.

00:28Urban and capital regions tended to report a much lower incidence of road fatalities,

00:36particularly the capital regions of Stockholm, Vienna and Berlin.

00:42The regions which saw the highest rate of fatalities per million inhabitants are

00:48Alentejo in Portugal, 149,

00:52Greece's southern Aegean and Ionian Islands, with 131 and 127 respectively,

01:00and Romania's southwest Oltenia, 123.

01:04The long-term trend, however, looks more hopeful.

01:08Over the last decade, the number of deaths fell in more than four of five regions in the EU.

01:15The most rapid decline took place in the Swedish region of Norra Mellansverige,

01:21Malopolske in Poland and Salzburg in Austria also reported falls of over 60%.
