Alcohol-free beer is becoming more popular in the EU: But will it overtake traditional beer?

Alcohol-free and low-alcohol beer production in the EU jumped by 13% from 2022 to 2023, while the share of traditional brews declined. How large is the gap now?

00:11The vast majority of beer produced in the EU remains alcoholic. In 2023, traditional beer

00:20accounted for around 95% of beer production, with over 32 billion litres. That's against

00:281.8 billion litres of alcohol-free beer, or with less than 0.5% of alcohol. But non-traditional

00:37beer is gaining ground. Production rose by over 13% from 2022 to 2023, while traditional beer

00:46went down by 5%. Germany remains by far the continent's biggest brewer, accounting for 22%

00:55of the EU's total output, followed by Spain at 12%. Germany places first also for alcohol-free

01:05beer, with around 30%, followed again by Spain at 14%. Despite Brexit, the UK is the preferred

01:15destination for EU beers, accounting for 23% of the total. Likewise, British beer is the most

01:25imported in the EU, followed by Mexican beer.
