00:20China has ended days of diplomatic suspense.
00:24Chinese President Xi Jinping is coming to India.
00:28And this will be his first visit to the country in seven years.
00:33Xi Jinping will travel to New Delhi on September 12th and 13th to attend the 18th BRICS summit
00:40at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
00:43This is a significant moment for India and China,
00:47because the last seven years have seen their relationship go through one of its most difficult phases.
00:53The big turning point was the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
00:58Twenty Indian soldiers were killed, along with an unknown number of Chinese soldiers.
01:03The border crisis then cast a long shadow over India-China relations.
01:09Xi's last visit to India was in 2019,
01:12when he met Prime Minister Modi for an informal summit in Mammalapuram near Chennai.
01:17Now, seven years later, Xi is returning to India.
01:22And the timing matters.
01:24Bilateral relations have shown signs of improvement in recent years,
01:29including after Prime Minister Modi's visit to China last year.
01:33New Delhi has also begun easing some restrictions on Chinese investment,
01:37including in sectors such as electronics, capital goods and solar manufacturing.
01:43Beijing, meanwhile, is signaling a different approach to the relationship.
01:48China's foreign ministry has said Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi believe India and China are partners,
01:55not competitors, and that the two countries represent opportunities,
01:59not threats, for each other's development.
02:02But despite the diplomatic thaw, there are still complications.
02:06Reuters reports that proposed investments by Chinese companies in India
02:11are facing more scrutiny from Beijing itself,
02:14particularly in areas involving sophisticated manufacturing and high-end technology.
02:20And then there is trade.
02:22Despite political and security tensions,
02:25India-China trade has continued to grow.
02:28Last year, bilateral trade rose 12.4 percent to a record $155 billion.
02:36That is more than double the $71.6 billion recorded a decade ago.
02:41And the momentum has continued.
02:43In the first seven months of this year,
02:46trade jumped another 23 percent compared with the same period last year.
02:51So, Xi Jinping's visit is about much more than the BRICS summit.
02:55It comes at a moment when India and China are trying to manage a delicate balance.
03:00Border security on one side and economic and diplomatic engagement on the other.
03:06The big question now is,
03:09can Xi's return to New Delhi turn this improving momentum
03:12into a more stable India-China relationship?
03:15For the first time in seven years,
03:18the answer may begin to take shape in Delhi.
