Boy, 7, is taking the golf world by storm with 12 first-place medals under his belt

A young golfer is taking the junior golf world by storm with 12 first-place medals under his belt at age seven.   Mnqobi’s passion for golf began after playing Mario Golf on Nintendo Switch with his father Dominic Chilvers, 38.   Eager to support his son's passion, Dominic started taking Mnqobi to play mini-golf, where it quickly became clear that the young boy had a natural talent for the sport.   In just three years, Mnqobi has competed in over 40 tournaments, winning a total of 19 medals and seven trophies.  Proud dad Dominic says he wants to continue encouraging his son while allowing him to make his own decisions about his future.

00:13Golf.

00:17How long have you been playing golf for?

00:19Two years.

00:21Almost three.

00:22Yeah.

00:23Yeah, almost three years.

00:24And do you enjoy it?

00:26Yes.

00:28We played Mario Golf together in lockdown.

00:32And then soon after that, he asked to play real golf.

00:36And so we took him to play mini golf.

00:39And then he saw the driving range and asked to go on the driving range.

00:43You said almost, man.

00:45I did?

00:46You said almost.

00:47I know. Yeah, that's a good part.

00:48Yeah, I almost said, no, you're too young.

00:51But I remembered that that's not how I want to parent.

00:56And I said, well, let's go find out.

00:58So we came down and we found out that you weren't too young.

01:01And then you asked to do competitions and you asked for lessons.

01:05And yeah, he just, he loves it.

01:11Have you got any favourite golfing icons or heroes?

01:16Yeah.

01:40To be a professional golfer.

01:42It's a joy to watch.

01:43It's just amazing watching him work on something.

01:47And sometimes he's working really hard to get something to work.

01:50And then when it works and he's loving it and really happy.

01:55And he'll be asked to do coaching and sometimes asked to do it pretty regularly.

02:00And then he gets me to help and I help you, don't I?

02:03Yeah.

02:04Yeah, but he's the one that puts in all the hard work and asks to come down and asks to train, don't you?

02:13What do your friends think when you tell them you play golf?

02:23What's it like when you bring your friends here to play golf with them?
