Victorians gather for Remembrance Day services on 90th anniversary of Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance

Remembrance Day services have been held across the country, marking 106 years since the end of the First World War. In Victoria, thousands gathered on what is also the 90th anniversary of the opening of Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance.

00:06Thousands attended a solemn service under bright skies at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance this morning.

00:14Today is about reflecting upon service, upon sacrifice and thinking about those that we have lost in the service of our nation.

00:25Veterans, servicemen and women, politicians and members of the public all gathered to pay tribute to the fallen.

00:37At the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, the Governor-General reminded attendees of the day's importance.

00:43To honour those who served down through the decades, to protect our way of life and the strength of our democracy.

00:51Today marks 106 years since the end of World War One.

00:54In 1934, Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance was officially opened by Prince Henry.

00:59The Shrine has been the home of commemoration and remembrance for Victorians for decades.

01:0490 years ago, almost 300,000 people gathered here to celebrate its opening and today's crowd believe it remains just as important.

01:12It's a permanent reminder of service. It's really entrenched as part of Victoria and part of Melbourne.

01:19On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we must always return to this sacred place, lest we forget.
