00:00It's a big day. It's a big two day stretch. Clay Thompson's returning. We love the four
00:04time chap. I'm wearing the captain clay hat right now. We have laughing monk Shasky laughing
00:09monk. They're in the building. Laughing monkey serve a breakfast right now. They got the
00:13prime rib and the bass potatoes out in the hallway right now. Oh, they got prime rib
00:17out there. Don't eat it all. Spadoni straight from Sunnyvale up to the city. Oh, serving
00:23us breakfast here. Then we get a Bay area legend on the line here on the river. I let's
00:26guess like Jason kid, the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. And he's one of our own.
00:30We always forget. He's from the Bay, California, the NBA chat back in 2011. Multiple all stars,
00:3510 of them to be exact and all NBA first team five times. Second team, Cal Berkeley legend,
00:41Jason kid. Good morning, man. Welcome to the morning roast. Joe Shasky, the butcher, Bontay
00:45Hill. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. I know it's tough during the season,
00:48especially after game yesterday in Denver, but we appreciate you spending some time with
00:53us this morning. I appreciate you guys having me. Anything for the Bay. Anything for the
00:58go. And what is it like for you to return to the Bay all the time? People forget how
01:02you put the Bay area on a map made you, Gary Payton, the pro-amps at Keys are pavilion.
01:07You are you are one of us. Yeah, it's always great to come home. A little rainy today,
01:15but it's it's always good to see the Bay Bridge. It's always good to see family and friends.
01:22And then also, you know, whenever I do come back, we're always playing the Warriors. If
01:26they're not winning a championship, they always are a team that's fighting for a championship.
01:30So it would be fun as you brought up plays first time back. So we're excited to be here
01:36and have practice today. And then we'll play the game tomorrow. Yeah, I'd be you didn't
01:41reference his time at St. Joe's, where he's just an absolute legend. I'm sorry, California,
01:45Mr. Bass. Absolute legend. You're pretty much everybody's favorite non-warrior outside of
01:52outside of the Warriors. Like everybody loved watching you play. You've done some great things
01:55for girls basketball in this area. Obviously, you and Armando and what used to be Golden City. Now
02:00it's Jason Kidd and Jason Kidd select the team. My niece was playing for you guys for the longest
02:04time, Megan. And I love that you are like at that grassroots level for for basketball, for,
02:10you know, the girls game and specifically. And you've done some great work out here. And I just
02:14from, I guess, the perspective of all the parents and the kids that have been in that program.
02:17Thank you, Jason. No, I appreciate that. But I want to say thank you for trusting us with your
02:25family member and understanding that we love women's sports. I love women's sports. It's,
02:31it's grown. It's got the attention that it needs and it's continued to grow. But when you talk
02:38about, you know, what Armando is doing to help run in that run that program, and then also our
02:45biggest sponsor, laughing monkey, were you a monk? I'm sorry, laughing monk that you have the food
02:51that you guys are having breakfast. I'm jealous. But it's, but it's exciting because I think the
02:57young ladies in the Bay Area last year, the teams went over to Croatia to play this next summer,
03:05they'll be going to Greece. And so we're just trying to give them the light of the world of
03:11being able to see different parts of the world and, and play the game of basketball that we all
03:15love. And Jason, you mentioned your select program, over 40 division one players came
03:20from your program. It's really truly remarkable. You're sending them not only to the next level,
03:24they're getting the education. And as you just mentioned, they get to travel the world. And now
03:28we have the Jason kid invitational at hospice million, December 14th and laughing monk will
03:32be a sponsor for that invitational. So I want to know from the grassroots, what made you involved
03:38or what got you going when it came to girls basketball, especially high school girls
03:42basketball? Yeah, you know, I think when you think about Kobe and what he was doing for the women's
03:49game, and unfortunately, the passing of Cole, I just felt that I wanted to help and continue his
03:57legacy and, and help women's sports. And so that really ignited the idea of the select team here
04:05in the Bay and doing it back at home. And so that's, that's where it all started. And again,
04:12it's been five years as you brought up the invitation at Cal. And so we're just trying
04:19to do as much as we can to give the women the opportunity to go to school and fulfill their
04:24dream. And if that's playing in the WNBA or becoming the next president of the United States
04:31or the next doctor. So it's been a lot of fun. Yeah. You know, you're now coaching
04:35Clay Thompson and all the Dallas Mavericks and been there for a couple of years now and
04:40being, I would just kind of kicking it around. Like Dwight Clark was beloved and the legend,
04:44and he only played for the Niners. Montana didn't come back to candlestick and play a candlestick.
04:50And Jerry Rice, when he went to the Raiders, he played the games in Oakland, but never got a,
04:56had a road game. This is so unique having a legend like Clay Thompson, that is beloved by
05:01warrior fans come back while he's playing in another uniform and play in one of the homes
05:07that he built, which is Chase center. Have you had a chance to kind of talk to him about what
05:12it might be like for him walking into that arena and hearing and seeing all the fans,
05:17you know, giving him a standing ovation that he deserves. Yeah. We talked the other day about this
05:24opportunity. It really doesn't happen a lot. You know, when you do leave a team that you've been
05:28with your whole career to have the opportunity to come back and play as you brought up the home
05:35that he built with chase and then also the excitement and the championships over in Oakland
05:42at the Coliseum. And so just understanding it's going to be an emotional two days here.
05:48We talk about today with practice and then tomorrow's game. And so my thoughts was to
05:55enjoy it, to embrace it and have fun with it. Jason kid here on the river Island has got signed
06:00on one or else on 95, seven, the game, Joe, she asked you to butcher Bonte Hill and Jason,
06:05when you did court Clay Thompson and you guys signed Clay Thompson. I remember thinking,
06:09damn, he's going to see somebody why they have somebody wide open looks playing off of Luca
06:13Kyrie Irving. What has he been like in Dallas? Cause he's a free spirit out here.
06:17We love captain clay. We love Rocco clay. We love China clay. We love, we had all these
06:22different nicknames for him. How does he integrate it with this new team here with
06:26Luca and Kyrie at the head of the snake here, Gafford there. And of course you coaching.
06:31Yeah, I think he's done an incredible job, but you know, as when you talk about Luca and
06:37Kai, you know, two of the best in the league and that we had clay and I think clay is a perfect
06:44fit for us. He's finding his way. Those two are making sure that he gets, he's getting touches
06:51and making sure that he's comfortable. And it just takes time. And I think as we go through
06:56here, we've had two games that have come down to the last shot. And so we're going through,
07:03you know, some battles and we're learning each other, but I think clay's a champion.
07:07He's been there before. You understand it's a marathon. It's not just one game or two games,
07:13but it's 82. And, uh, we're very lucky to have the leadership and his, uh, you know,
07:17his ability to shoot it, but also to be able to defend and, and help take some of the pressure
07:22off of clay and Kai, you know, this generation of basketball players. So different from when you
07:27play Jason and you know, a lot of people do it for the clicks or whatnot. How refreshing is it
07:31to have a player like Luca, Kyrie, and then you add in clay Thompson, who's all about ball plays,
07:36all about getting buckets of playing ball at the highest level. How refreshing is that for you as
07:40a coach? Cause it seems like you don't have to, he's not a high maintenance type of guy, right?
07:44No, it's their pros. All three of those guys you just mentioned are pros.
07:48They're about winning. Uh, they had one goal in mind as to win a championship. And so, um,
07:54you know, understanding that they're not high maintenance, uh, they're,
07:57they're about doing their work and finding a way to win.
08:01You know, as a lover of sports in general, you know, there's so many great combos, you know,
08:06Gronk and Brady, or, you know, Joe and Jerry, uh, Pippen and Jordan, and let's just stick with
08:12basketball, Steph and clay, like when they were together, it's as good of a combo. I mean,
08:18clearly as a backcourt combo, but like Jordan Pippen, Kobe and Shaq, LeBron and Dwyane Wade,
08:24like, are they up there with those combinations when they were together?
08:28Yeah, they, they're, they're, they're definitely up there with those combinations.
08:32It's all about the splash brothers. Um, just, you know, the uniqueness of how they played the game,
08:40um, how they, you know, played for one another and helped each other achieve,
08:44you know, the highest goals and that's, you know, to win a championship and
08:48two of the best shooters of all time to be on the same team is unique in its own right.
08:53Uh, but they, they love to play. They knew how to win. They learned how to win. Um, and so yes,
09:00that combination that will go down as one of the best combinations in the NBA.
09:04What was more oppressive to you? And I know there's no wrong answer here, coach, but
09:0937 points in the quarter or 60 points on 11 shrivels. Clay Thompson.
09:16I take both of them.
09:19Have you ever scored 37 and a half Jason? That's what I know. This guy's 37 and a quarter wilt
09:23in his a hundred point game. Chris Malone on the pregame show. He says, well, it never,
09:27he didn't even score 37 and a quarter when he had a hundred. Have you ever scored 37 and a half?
09:31Jay? No, I, you know, I, that's impressive, right? The 37, but I think the, the drip with the note,
09:38you know, being able to not have to dribble to score is kind of special in its own right. And so,
09:45uh, but both of them are, are incredible feats. And, uh, as I said, as a coach, I'll take,
09:50I'll take both of those. You know, Draymond's been, yeah, he's got his podcast and he says
09:54a lot of stuff about how, you know, obviously everyone's going to get emotional and they're
09:57going to honor clay. Then when the ball gets tipped up, it's we got to play, you know,
10:02we got to play. And everybody brings up Kobe running through Paul, the saw at the USA,
10:07a dream team or redeem team. A few years back. Did you ever have a teammate that
10:12you went to another team and you and him had maybe an altercation on the floor?
10:18I haven't. Um, but I understand that, you know, Draymond,
10:22I use that reference of Kobe and I was Kobe's teammate on that dream team or
10:29on the redeemed team. And so just to understand, we didn't, we, you know,
10:34Kobe said it and we didn't believe it, but he did it. And he knew, and he knew exactly what
10:40play they were going to run. And, and he did it, but you know, Kobe was, you know,
10:46had, he was on a mission. He wanted to win a gold medal and Spain was in our way.
10:51And so he wanted to make sure he sent a message that, um, we're friends, but right now you're
10:56the enemy and I'm here to try to find a way to win and I'll do whatever it takes.
11:00And Noah Clay Thompson coach that he's going to have that same mentality as well as like,
11:04once the ball gets tipped off. Yeah. I love all the Captain Clay has, but I'm trying to hit
11:08five threes on you in the first quarter. We're trying to get a win to get our season back on
11:11track here. What do you remember about going to your former teams? Obviously get
11:15drafted by the Dallas Mavericks. And you guys had a lot of expectations,
11:18a young core with Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson, but what was it like going back to
11:21Dallas? What was it like going back to Phoenix? Do you remember the first time going back to
11:25a former team coach? Yeah, it was, uh, it's emotional because you always think you're
11:30going to be there forever. And unfortunately business sometimes gets in the way and things
11:34change. Um, but you don't want to think you guys brought up a good point. There are emotions,
11:39but once the ball goes up, you're trying to figure out how to get the W how to play your
11:44best game and then have fun doing it. And, uh, and then be able to talk to some of the people
11:49that you've spent a lot of time with after the game. You know, I'm watching your team from afar
11:54last year. You guys made some great, uh, deadline acquisitions and you did a great job kind of
11:59implementing things on the fly. Um, it just felt like you were a totally different team making
12:03your way all the way to the finals. What was the hardest part in incorporating Kyrie and Luca and,
12:08and balancing that out as a former port guard yourself? Like how, how did you kind of struggle
12:13with that and work through it throughout the year? Yeah, I don't know if it was a struggle.
12:18I think it was more of just patience and given these two time, um, their artists, uh, with the
12:23ball, they understand how to play the game at a high level. And it was just a matter of being
12:28able to have time under their belt to, to get used to each other. That's, and sometimes we
12:34want instant, you know, they want for it to look good or be perfect. But I think when you talk
12:41about the sport or human element, it just takes time. And once they figured each other out,
12:46um, they took off and, uh, and that was a big reason what helped us, you know, get to the
12:51finals last year. And we believe, you know, that's kind of the space we are right now with
12:56clay. Just give us a little time and we're going to figure out to get these three on the same page
13:00and we're going to roll JC. Now you jog my memory here. Cause I do want to get back to you, the JC
13:05kids select program and what you have going on with that. And we have some thank yous that I
13:08want to read off for you, but you brought us up last year. It was so funny to the clip and we
13:13played it on our pregame show where you asked a reporter, you go, do you guys ever write anything
13:17good about us? Like, do we celebrate? And we, we always talk about this on this show. When the
13:21Niners lose, our phone lines are packed. Everybody wants to rip everybody. Everybody wants to fire
13:26everybody. There's no, there's all this instant gratification and there's no perspective here,
13:30but yet when they win, you know, Oh, well, yeah, they won. Great. Great. What is it about
13:34the way the game is covered out? Cause we see the ratings and I love the NBA. Shasky loves the NBA,
13:39but it is the way it's covered where everybody wants to pick apart. Everything is saying,
13:42Hey, if this guy doesn't win the championship, he's a bum. Or if this team doesn't win here,
13:46they're, they're done. What happened to perspective in the sports world? Coach,
13:50can you figure that one out? No, I don't even want to touch that. I think when you just, I mean,
13:59everybody has a right to their opinion, but again the league is so talented
14:04and there are some really good teams and we ran into one last year in Boston.
14:10But you know, Golden State, Oklahoma city, Minnesota, there's, there's stars on every
14:15team and understanding if you're playing your best basketball at the right time, you have a
14:20chance, but there's no guarantee anyone took the way in championship. You gotta go earn it.
14:25You gotta go take it. But I think that's what makes sports fun is that everybody has an opinion
14:31and a lot of times some people are right and a lot of times on the other side of the coin,
14:36people are wrong. And so I think that's what makes sport as a fan. And that's why we play it.
14:43Yeah. I don't think people appreciate the greatness enough on a day-to-day basis. That's
14:47you athletes here, especially in the NBA that you guys do on a consistent basis with all the traveling,
14:51all the games going into rockets arenas or whatnot. The game's played at the highest
14:55level it's ever been at. So I do want to read some thank yous here, coach. And we appreciate
14:59the time again, Jason kid here on a morning roast on the river Island's guest line. A guy from
15:03Sonoma, Liam Fairfield says he won a contest several years ago on another radio station that
15:07allowed his son to attend the Jason kid basketball camp in Sonoma. He said, he never got the chance
15:12to thank him for saving my son from going in the wrong direction. Jason is the best and he can't
15:17thank him enough. And so that's one. Thank you from a camp you had seven years ago. And I think
15:21with these young ladies, you're doing the same thing. Cause I think you should pat yourself on
15:25the back for that because Jason kid select is saving a lot of lives. I appreciate that. I
15:30appreciate that. Thank you. We need to do another camp in Sonoma. That was a great camp, but it's
15:35not just me, but it takes a lot of people to make this happen. And so Armando, when you talk about
15:41laughing Monk, our biggest sponsor, they're the people that we should thank because they're the
15:46ones that do it, but also the parents for trusting us with their, um, their young ones to,
15:52to push them, uh, and also to tell them the truth and, uh, and it's all about hard work.
15:58And if you do that, uh, good things will happen. Uh, coach, I'm going to go way back in the
16:02yesteryear. Obviously, everyone's going to talk about the behind the back plays against Duke and
16:06you guys knocking them off. I'm going to go more, even more local. I remember when you,
16:11it was rumored, you were coming out to the pro out at Kezar and my boy Reggie Milligan was
16:16working the board and all of us kids, you are our favorite player. And you came out,
16:20there's like Brian Shaw, Bennett Davidson. I believe the house might've been out there.
16:25Antonio Davis is like the pro-am and planet keys are, did you realize how big of a thing it was
16:31for an NBA superstar and co-rookie of the year like yourself to like show up and dominate the
16:37prom? Cause that was like some of the coolest, that was some of the coolest stuff I've ever
16:40seen as a young man. It, it, it formulated my love of the game of basketball.
16:44Well, I, I used to love planet. Uh, he's our, uh, that, that was an incredible, um,
16:51because the fans that would come out, the trail Hill was another favorite one of mine,
16:56uh, to be able to go on the Hill and play. Um, and so I love to play basketball. I love the
17:03competition. Um, but the, the, the fans came out for sure for the pro-am. Um, and it was nothing
17:11like playing in the pro-am in the summer in San Francisco. No doubt. What about the boat? Have
17:15you, have you had a chance to get on Clay's boat? Clay doesn't have a boat Dallas, right? Cause you
17:19guys only have lakes out there. Tell us about the Texas. Yeah, we only have lakes. So, uh, I haven't
17:25been on, I have not been on the clay boat yet, but at some point we've got to get clay to get
17:31on the boat for tomorrow's game. Are you allowed at coach? He's like, no, we're all on the team bus.
17:34I'm making sure you get the safe, safe and sound.
17:39Navigate the Bay area waters here, coach. Come on now.
17:43I'm going to stay on land in that way.
17:48Last one before you, we get you out again. We thank you for the time with the Jason
17:51kid select program. Don't forget about the Jason kid invitation to a house pavilion,
17:55December 14th laughing month. We'll be sponsoring that to have breakfast for us today.
17:59And we love them for coming up from Sunnyvale this morning, but the woman's game, the girl's
18:04game, it feels like it's at an all time high and it's only getting better coach. I was going to
18:08ask you whether or not you have plans on maybe after the NBA career, maybe coaching women's
18:12basketball or whatnot, but where the game is going and where it can go. Can you talk about
18:17the growth of the woman's game? Yeah, I think when you talk about the women's game, it's the
18:21growth is incredible. Uh, the platforms that they are on, uh, the viewership, uh, when you talk
18:29about the highest level of the WNBA, they've added, uh, a team here in, in San Francisco
18:35that will be online. And then I think you have Toronto and Portland coming online here in the
18:43next couple of years. And so it just shows the growth, uh, not just in women's basketball,
18:48but also in soccer. Um, and it's great for our country, but for our young ladies to have an
18:53opportunity to play the game at the highest level without having to go abroad. And so it's,
18:58I think it's great coach. This was great. It's always fun talking to you. We love you here in
19:03the Bay area. This will always be your home. You know, that, um, just good luck for the rest of
19:07the season, except for tomorrow. You know, we're still dove fans, but we want clay to do well.
19:10And we do like watching Mavericks basketball, but you guys are much watched on NBA league pass. So
19:14coach, thanks for the time today. Good luck the rest of the season. I appreciate that. Thanks
19:19for having me. We'll see you guys tomorrow. Absolutely. Jason kid here on the morning
19:22roaster head coach of the Dallas Mavericks chasing kids select, check out their program.
