Now, let's take a look at She Shines, the inspiring story of a young entrepreneur.
00:07
But before that, let's all watch this.
00:11
Coffee. That's the fuel of students or employees.
00:15
Always with you when you wake up and even in the nights when you don't have anything to do, projects and tasks.
00:22
But there's a type of coffee that doesn't just help you get rid of sleepiness,
00:26
but also has heart and advocacy.
00:29
That's what is offered in the very first bottled coffee cart owned by a college student named Meg Bay.
00:37
Meg is only 19 years old.
00:39
She started to help and support local farmers
00:43
and give opportunities to working students through her business.
00:49
In every bottle, you will not only feel sweet and hot,
00:54
but also the importance of every bottle of coffee given by local farmers.
00:59
Likewise, the efforts of students to achieve their dreams.
01:05
If so, let's find out the inspiring journey of Meg Bay here in She Shines.
01:13
And now, we are live in the studio with the young entrepreneur, Meg Bay.
01:18
Hi Meg, good morning.
01:19
Hello, good morning. Thank you for having me today.
01:21
At 19 years old, she's an entrepreneur and a very beautiful entrepreneur, right?
01:26
Yes, a college student.
01:27
And when we say young, how old are you Meg?
01:29
I'm 19 years old.
01:30
19, very inspiring, not lean.
01:34
So how did you think of this? How did you start your business?
01:38
Well, actually, I started my business when I was still young.
01:41
I was already fond of doing business.
01:43
I was still in elementary school when I started selling candies,
01:48
because I grew up in poverty.
01:50
I really know the reality of life, how hard life is.
01:54
So I really help to be able to help my family, even if I just provide what I need.
02:01
But my coffee business, I started it when I was 19 years old.
02:06
So, I saw the coffee market here in the Philippines.
02:12
Even if you're young, old, in school, students, workers,
02:17
what they really drink is coffee.
02:20
Coffee is life.
02:21
Coffee is life.
02:22
So I really saw the potential of the coffee business.
02:27
But I said, since there are a lot of people doing business,
02:31
I really thought of making bottled coffee.
02:34
Bottled coffee.
02:35
And then, I went back to how I started.
02:40
Because I started by going around.
02:43
I would go around in the classroom,
02:45
I would go around in our school,
02:47
I would sell to the professors,
02:49
I would sell to the classes.
02:51
Then, I would go to MOA, I would go around.
02:54
So, that's where the idea of going around started.
02:57
Because I started by selling my coffee.
02:59
Okay, so if there are people who sell taho, ice cream on the street,
03:03
this is their bottled coffee.
03:04
Bottled coffee.
03:05
It's different, right?
03:06
And business with a heart.
03:08
Advocacy is good.
03:09
You're helping working students, right?
03:11
Yes.
03:12
And also farmers.
03:13
Yes.
03:14
Because I said, when I started,
03:16
I saw how my father struggled to provide for my studies.
03:23
So, that's where I went back to my inspiration again.
03:27
I saw how hard life is.
03:29
So, my father was a businessman,
03:31
and I was the only one studying.
03:33
He still had a hard time providing.
03:35
So, that's how hard life is now.
03:37
So, now, I thought, what kind of family would have four children,
03:41
three colleges, and siblings?
03:43
So, I thought, why?
03:45
I made something unique out of coffee
03:49
that can help students.
03:51
So, so far, I have working students.
03:54
Are they your classmates, schoolmates?
03:57
No, they're from different schools.
03:59
So, we have different schools.
04:02
So, different universities.
04:05
So, it's not just that.
04:06
We also have single moms and single dads in our production area.
04:11
So, that's what I'm helping to do,
04:13
to provide a source of income for working students.
04:18
That's great.
04:19
It's like we're talking to a 19-year-old.
04:22
She knows the potential of the market.
04:24
Correct.
04:25
And we can also see in the video that you really have your production place.
04:31
So, is this close to you?
04:33
Yes, it is.
04:34
So, what area does your product go to?
04:37
So, our coffee is sold in Novaliches, Caloocan, Fairview.
04:42
We also go around there.
04:44
So, in our production area,
04:47
actually, we just started.
04:49
I was just part of my father's business.
04:53
So, after school, I went straight to my father's store.
04:59
And then, I'll start at 10 p.m.
05:01
until 4 a.m.
05:03
to formulate the coffee.
05:05
That's great.
05:06
That's a lot of bottles in a day.
05:07
How many bottles do you pack?
05:09
3,000.
05:10
3,000?
05:11
And how many employees do you have?
05:13
So far, I have 25 working students,
05:16
and I'm turning 30 this Sunday.
05:18
So, my goal is to give more opportunities to working students.
05:24
So, my goal is to have at least 100 this year.
05:27
Of course, that's my goal and my vision,
05:33
to give jobs to working students to support their studies.
05:37
Are you a coffee lover?
05:39
Of course, I'm a coffee lover.
05:42
People call me a coffee lover, but I started as a non-coffee lover.
05:45
Okay.
05:46
I just saw the coffee market.
05:48
I'm acidic.
05:49
Yes, we're both acidic.
05:51
But the good thing is,
05:53
I can now drink coffee because of my coffee.
05:56
It's less acidic.
05:57
Okay.
05:58
So, I formulated it in a less acidic way so that I can drink it.
06:01
But during the process of formulation,
06:03
it took me a long time because I'm acidic.
06:06
So, you've tested it yourself?
06:09
Yes, I did.
06:10
And another thing, I use local coffee beans.
06:14
Where do you source it?
06:15
I have it in Cordillera and Baguio.
06:18
We have a direct supplier there.
06:20
Aside from helping working students,
06:23
one of my main advocacy is to introduce our local products,
06:29
our local coffee,
06:31
which comes from our farmers.
06:35
So, it's not just for students.
06:37
Even for farmers, it's beneficial.
06:39
There you go.
06:40
I hope we can taste this coffee.
06:42
That's right.
06:43
It's so fluffy.
06:44
I can also see the color green.
06:46
Is it matcha?
06:47
Matcha.
06:48
It's so beautiful.
06:49
This is our bestseller, matcha.
06:51
That's crazy.
06:52
That's what I'm talking about, Ms. Dayan.
06:54
What's your long-term goal for this?
06:56
And how will you make it sustainable?
06:58
Because your advocacy is so beautiful.
07:00
And it seems profitable.
07:02
You're able to help others.
07:03
Of course, the goal is to make the business long-term, right?
07:06
Yes.
07:07
Alright.
07:08
So, for my short-term goal,
07:09
as I mentioned,
07:10
I want to have 100 students by the end of the year.
07:15
From 25 or 30 to 100 students.
07:18
Yes.
07:19
Because we're going to scale this coming December.
07:22
So, I'm achieving to have 100 students this year.
07:26
If not, but that's the goal.
07:29
100 students.
07:30
For a long-term goal,
07:31
of course, I want the product to be released in a larger market.
07:35
I want everyone to taste it.
07:37
And we really want to promote our own product.
07:39
Because we're coffee lovers.
07:41
So, we really want to promote Kaping Pinoy.
07:45
Magnite will really succeed.
07:47
Yes, she's really good.
07:48
She's still a kid, but she's an entrepreneur.
07:50
And lastly,
07:51
what advice can you give to young people who want to start a business?
07:57
Okay.
07:58
So, my advice to young people who want to start a business is,
08:02
for me, it takes a lot of things to be an entrepreneur.
08:08
So, the most important thing as a young person is,
08:12
first, you have to know where you're passionate,
08:15
and just do what you love.
08:17
Because, as we can see now,
08:19
on the internet,
08:20
there are a lot of young people who stop studying to start a business.
08:26
But at the end of the day,
08:27
there's a quote,
08:28
diploma or discarte, right?
08:30
So, that's what's confusing me.
08:33
For you, can you answer that?
08:34
Last one.
08:35
Diploma or discarte?
08:38
For me,
08:39
if it's diploma or discarte,
08:42
what I'll say is,
08:43
just do what you love.
08:45
Alright?
08:46
Because it doesn't matter.
08:47
Diploma or discarte doesn't apply to everyone.
08:50
For me,
08:51
I chose my business that can help other people over my studies.
08:57
So, it doesn't apply to everyone.
08:59
Because, of course,
09:00
there are young people who dream of becoming a doctor or a teacher.
09:03
So, finish your studies and get that diploma.
09:06
So, the concept of diploma and discarte doesn't apply to everyone.
09:11
But it will help you.
09:12
But my advice is,
09:14
be determined,
09:16
passionate,
09:17
hardworking,
09:19
and always focus on your goals.
09:22
Can we do that too?
09:27
Let's be business partners.
09:30
Thank you so much and all the best.
09:32
Good luck.
09:33
Thank you for having me.
09:35
You inspired me a lot this morning.
09:37
Thank you, Meg Bae.
