00:17The situation in the Philippines is getting worse and better.

00:21This is based on the data of the Philippine Statistics Authority or PSA

00:24that they estimated for the month of September this year.

00:27According to the PSA, the country's unemployment rate decreased by 3.7%

00:32from 4.5% last year in the same month

00:36and 4.0% in August 2024.

00:39This is equivalent to 1.89 million unemployed

00:43which is lower than 2.26 million in September 2023

00:47and 2.07 million in August 2024.

00:51At the same time, the employment rate increased by 96.3%

00:55from 95.5% in 2023

00:58which is equivalent to 49.87 million Filipinos who have jobs this September

01:03which is higher than 47.67 million in 2023 in the same month

01:09and 49.15 million in August 2024.

01:12The labor force participation rate also increased by 65.7%

01:17compared to 64.1% in September 2023.

01:21According to National Statistician Undersecretary Dennis Mapa,

01:24this is equivalent to the increase of the number of unemployed workers this holiday season

01:28despite the calamities experienced in the past few months.

01:31Yes, of course, because of the holiday season, more wants to work

01:36that's why our employment rate increased in terms of both the rate and the numbers

01:41but not all of it was absorbed as full-time

01:45and thus you have also a substantial increase in the underemployment.

01:50Mapa also asked if there is an effect of the storm on the employment rate.

01:54It really has an impact because normally the storm we see has an effect on the agriculture.

01:59Remember, our agricultural sector accounts for almost 20% of our workers.

02:04Even so, they are still positive about the rise of the unemployment rate

02:07because of the entry of new jobs in Vermont

02:10particularly in retail, accommodation, supermarkets that seasonal workers get.

02:15Meanwhile, according to National Economic Development Authority Secretary Arsenio Balisacan

02:19the government's priority is to improve the quality and better income of Filipino workers.

02:25In addition to the storm, their implementation of Supply and Demand Side Interventions continues

02:30to meet the Quality Employment Targets that are included in their Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.
