00:43Okay, Dr. Zayda, could you please share with us

00:45what is the problem in the seaweed farming in Tawi-Tawi?

00:49What are the obstacles in the development of this industry?

00:55The biggest problem of the seaweed industry right now

00:59is the decline in production.

01:03And the cause of this is the low quality of the seedlings

01:13because they are using the same strains over the last 50 years.

01:18So, we need to be able to produce new strains

01:23to replace what our farmers are planting right now.

01:27How big is the seaweed industry in the Philippines?

01:31How many farmers are affected by this problem?

01:40Dr. Halon, there is a problem with our signal.

03:00but there are around 1.2 million people involved in the industry

03:05including their families who have jobs

03:08and earn money in this industry.

03:10So, many people are affected by the decline in the production

03:14of our seaweed farming industry.

03:16Okay.

03:17Doctor, for the public's knowledge,

03:20what are the products that can be produced by the seaweed industry?

03:26The most extracted product from the Ucumatoid seaweeds

03:31is carrageenan.

03:33This is what is used in the food and non-food industries.

03:36It thickens.

03:38If you notice, it is used in ice cream, burgers,

03:42in our toothpaste, cosmetics.

03:44It has carrageenan.

03:46It is mixed.

03:48Especially those that have water and oil that cannot be mixed.

03:51It can be mixed if it has carrageenan.

03:53So, it has many applications.

03:55This is what is extracted and this is the biggest industry

03:58from our seaweed farms.

04:01What is the Niseron Seaweeds in MSU Tawi-Tawi?

04:05Who will be given the service of this center?

04:10So, this Seaweed Research and Development Center

04:13was established in Mindanao State University in Tawi-Tawi

04:17to address the decline of our production of seaweeds.

04:21So, we have three laboratories.

04:24We have a Seaweed Tissue Lab, Culture Lab,

04:27where we produce new strains

04:29from the existing farm cultivars and from the wild.

04:33Because we have a lot of wild populations of eukaryotic seaweeds.

04:37So, we use seaweed tissue culture techniques

04:40to produce new seedlings.

04:42Then, we take care of our nursery

04:45and distribute it to the farmers.

04:48Because we need to give our farmers a new harvest

04:52so that their seaweeds production can increase again.

04:57As you said, the production of seaweeds can increase.

05:01In your opinion, ma'am,

05:02the technology that you have developed in Niseron Seaweeds,

05:06can you also share it with the farmers in other parts of the country?

05:11Because it is now concentrated in Mindanao.

05:16So, the technology can be shared.

05:19But the seedlings that we produce cannot be distributed.

05:23We have to make sure that there are no microbes

05:27that can be transferred to other places in the Philippines.

05:30So, we really need to clean these seedlings before we transfer them.

05:35But the technology of producing seedlings can be shared.

05:40Okay.

05:41So, Dr. Zaida mentioned low-quality seedlings.

05:45That is one of your challenges.

05:49So, what is your timeline, ma'am,

05:51so that the seedlings that you mentioned

05:55can be distributed and utilized?

06:02We are saying that within the next three years,

06:05the seedlings can be distributed in other parts of the Philippines.

06:09Right now, we are in Sulu Archipelago

06:12just to make sure that the seedlings grow well

06:18and make sure that it will not spread

06:20if there are microbes that can be transferred to other places.

06:23So that the disease of ice ice will increase.

06:25Ice ice disease is one of the diseases of seaweeds.

06:28It turns white and disintegrates,

06:31which we don't want to happen in other sites.

06:34So, this is all for now.

06:39It's easier, I guess, to make sure that we ensure first that it's clean

06:44before we transfer it to other sites.

06:47Dr. Saida, if a business is interested in investing in the seaweed industry,

06:54why should they invest here?

06:56Do you think that in the next few years,

07:01they will be able to earn and invest here?

07:07It's a huge industry right now.

07:10Actually, there is a huge demand for carrageen worldwide.

07:13We have processors in the Philippines.

07:16Actually, we are the largest producer of carrageen.

07:19We distribute carrageen all over the world.

07:23So, we really need to invest because this is our raw material.

07:27If we don't have raw material, we won't be able to process it.

07:30In fact, we have a 60% deficit of raw material.

07:33We are importing raw material from Indonesia

07:36to meet the needs of our processors.

07:40So, we really need to increase our production.

07:43Alright, maybe this is the last message, Dr. Saida,

07:52Anyway, I just want to say that I hope that in the next 3 years,

07:57or let's say 10 years,

07:59the capacity of our seaweed farmers will return

08:16Not only carrageen, but also bioplastics and other animal feeds

08:21that we can get from our seaweeds.
