00:00One of the things that Guy and I really set out to do
00:03was take a lot of disparate elements
00:05that didn't feel like they were connected
00:07and bring them together in a way
00:09that helps the viewer understand
00:10how connected these different things are.
00:13For me as a director, the great challenge of that,
00:15of course, is structure,
00:16because you're having to take lots of really dense ideas,
00:18people that have written books about these topics,
00:21and distill it to its most basic element,
00:23and then make that thing feel connected to everything else.
00:27That's a great storytelling challenge.
00:29And for me, it was really that constant process
00:32of ideation, of revision,
00:34of going through each editorial pass
00:37to really try and finesse those ideas
00:40to their most basic elements
00:42so that you could understand, and I could understand,
00:44what was happening in the United States.
00:47I think for all of us,
00:49when we've been going through this production process,
00:51trying to find those elements that make sense,
00:55that add up to something bigger,
00:57has been the great challenge.
00:58And I hope that as you watch the film,
01:00that you're going to be able to not only understand
01:03how we've arrived at this polarized moment
01:05in American society,
01:06but also understand how you have an impact
01:08in getting out of it.
