TAS captain Lily Grieve talks about the inclusion of girls in the historic Waratah Shield rugby competition after the school faced up against rivals from NEGS.

00:00So, Lily, yes, the Waratah Shield has been going for decades as a schoolboy competition.

00:07What are your thoughts on it expanding now to include schoolgirls?

00:10Oh, it's unreal. It's so good to be part of the first one.

00:14I know the boys have been giving it a hard crack, but it's awesome that they've let the girls in.

00:19I think we really showed them what it's about this afternoon here with the next girls.

00:22So, tell me a bit about the game today. How do you feel the girls went on the paddock?

00:29Oh, it was so good. The girls really gelled.

00:32I know we only had one training session. I'm sure the next girls were the same.

00:35But, yeah, we really went out there and worked for each other

00:38and just wanted to give all the people that were here a good show.

00:42So, the current format for this is tennis side.

00:47Some of you have been playing in sevens competitions, only a few perhaps in fifteens.

00:52How did you feel the format worked?

00:56Oh, yeah, good. A lot of the girls, it was their first time playing tens.

00:59I think it just gives a few of us a bit more opportunities than sevens,

01:03but you've still got the speed and those opportunities around the edges.

01:06So, yeah, it was really good.

01:08And I guess, too, here we are on Tesback Field.

01:10It's historically been quite an iconic place for schoolboy rugby.

01:14It's obviously historic for the Waratah Shield, but also particularly for Armadale.

01:22So, yeah, how do you feel about today being part of making history?

01:28Yeah, it was awesome. I'm so glad that I got to share it with the girls that I did.

01:33Having all the boys and all my good mates come out and sing war cries

01:38and cheer for everyone when they score tries is the best feeling I've had in a while.
