00:00Don't be fooled by the sparkles, this is amongst Sydney's worst rated ocean beaches for water
00:08quality.
00:09The water is clear now, but there's definitely days where you go to the beach and it's pretty
00:12murky.
00:13Bronte Beach was previously graded good, but the state government's latest report card
00:18has branded it poor.
00:20The classification means the location is susceptible to faecal pollution.
00:24It still looks nice, so it tastes the same.
00:28Deborah Prosser swims most days.
00:31If it's been heavy rain, it's probably going to be polluted here.
00:35She usually checks the water quality online.
00:38Here it's often not good.
00:40I won't swim, mostly won't swim, if it's not clear.
00:45The rating covers the last financial year, before hundreds of tar balls mysteriously
00:50washed ashore last week.
00:53Also downgraded to poor were Shelley Beach at Manly and Boat Harbour at Kernel, as well
00:58as several harbour enclosures, including Murray Rose Pool, formerly called Redleaf
01:03Pool.
01:04The main issue is stormwater and how that's managed, and how that's managed at council
01:09level.
01:10Coogee Beach is a repeat offender, rated poor for the third year in a row.
01:15A working group was formed to try to improve the water quality at Coogee.
01:19It's come up with a plan to divert stormwater away from the beach.
01:23The team is working on a proposal to present to Radwick City Council.
01:27Daily water quality data is published on the government's Beach Watch website.
01:32Soon Penrith Beach, also known as Pond Eye, will get a weekly rating.
01:37And with a wet summer forecast, it could come in handy.
01:40Unless there's a sign up saying don't go in, then I might not, but even then, I'll probably
01:45still go in.
01:46No amount of pollution stopping some from taking the plunge.
