00:00Abby McGrath knew something was seriously wrong when her daughter Emma's health deteriorated
00:07suddenly one morning in 2017.
00:10Fifteen hours later, Emma died.
00:13She had contracted meningococcal septicaemia W, a bacterial blood infection that spreads
00:18rapidly.
00:19She was very caring.
00:21She had a lot of friends.
00:23She did ballet for 13 years.
00:26She was the glue that she just naturally kept everyone together.
00:32After Emma's death, immunisations for most strains of meningococcal became free for children
00:36under the National Immunisation Program.
00:39But the vaccine for strain B is still optional and costs up to $400 per child in Victoria.
00:46There have been 17 cases of meningococcal in Victoria so far this year.
00:51Twelve of them were the B strain.
00:53Victoria's helped set up the foundation called 4EK and has been campaigning to get the vaccines
00:58added to the National Immunisation Program.
01:01But in the meantime, the foundation has had to take more direct action to protect children.
01:07At Phoenix College in Ballarat, 4EK has raised enough money to fully vaccinate all Year 11
01:13students.
01:14It's very expensive for most students to do so, so it's really generous of them to come
01:17here.
01:18Victoria's Department of Health says it will be guided by the National Immunisation Program,
01:22which is set by the Commonwealth, on whether it should expand the eligibility for the meningococcal
01:27B vaccine.
01:28But in South Australia and Queensland, it's already free for children.
01:33I don't want another family to go through what we go through.
01:37This is a living nightmare every day.
01:39While she waits for action, Abbey McGrath says Emma's foundation will continue crowdfunding vaccines.
