00:00We are back talking about a ketogenic way of eating
00:03when you hack your body into a state of ketosis
00:06where you start burning fat for fuel.
00:08Now I'm joined by trader Drew Manning
00:09who swears by ketosis.
00:11And just to give you an example,
00:14a few years ago, Drew gained 75 pounds, there he is,
00:18to understand what it meant to be overweight
00:20so he could relate to his clients.
00:22Then what he did, he lost in six months all that weight.
00:26And he has maintained it through a ketogenic lifestyle.
00:30So that's what we're talking about today.
00:32So I want him to break it down
00:33so we can all understand exactly
00:34what we should eat on a ketogenic diet.
00:36So I've got some representation here.
00:39Explain to me how this works.
00:41So you wanna make sure you get enough fat in.
00:43So 75 to 80% of your total calories should come from fat.
00:46That's why I see all this butter here.
00:4815, 10 to 15% should come from protein
00:51and about 5% from carbs.
00:52You gotta make sure and keep your carbs low
00:54and loaded up with fat.
00:56So one more time.
00:57So three quarters of everything is fat.
00:58Yes.
00:59Which is more than I talk about.
01:00Only about 20% is protein.
01:01That's a lot lower than I usually recommend.
01:03Exactly.
01:04It's a high fat, moderate protein, low carb approach.
01:07And what's the problem with having more protein
01:08and less fat?
01:09Because if you eat too much protein,
01:11it can actually kick you out of ketosis
01:12through a process called gluconeogenesis.
01:14So if you eat too much protein,
01:16it'll kick you out of ketosis
01:17and it'll convert the protein to glucose.
01:20Yeah, which is interesting.
01:22We do make glucose from lots of things
01:24except we can't make it from fat.
01:25Exactly.
01:26So now while you're saying,
01:27the more fat you eat,
01:28the less sugar you're gonna have in your body
01:29no matter what your body tries to do.
01:30Exactly.
01:30And what happens if you have some really healthy,
01:33colorful vegetables
01:34that happen to have a little carbohydrate in them?
01:36Yeah, so you definitely wanna limit
01:37those types of vegetables
01:38like sweet potato jams, carrots,
01:40because they're a little bit starchier
01:41and they're higher in carbs.
01:42You definitely gotta make sure to keep those carbs low.
01:44Otherwise, it'll kick you out of ketosis.
01:46So you know what I do for a living?
01:47I'm a heart surgeon, right?
01:49I spend my day taking people's chest
01:51and opening with a bandsaw
01:52and getting in there to pull out stuff
01:54that looks like this.
01:55From arteries.
01:56So it just makes me a little nervous.
01:58You're not concerned that this might be unsafe?
02:01You know, I used to think that way as well.
02:03A lot of us have thought that way
02:04for a long period of time.
02:05But if you look at a lot of the new research,
02:07it shows when you eat these good quality fats
02:09without the presence of refined sugars
02:11and processed carbohydrates,
02:13it actually forces your body
02:14to use that fat for fuel
02:16instead of storing it in the body
02:17and clogging your arteries.
02:18And you say these good fats.
02:19So what fats do you prefer to eat?
02:21I get it's probably not,
02:21you know, buckets of butter.
02:22No, I don't eat this much butter.
02:23This is not what a typical day looks like for me.
02:25But coconut oil, coconut, avocado, avocado oil,
02:29things like fattier meats, bacon, salmon,
02:32fattier cuts of beef even.
02:34So real whole versions,
02:35but not a lot of saturated fats.
02:37All right, are there any fats
02:38that are off limits you won't eat at all?
02:40Yeah, you definitely wanna stay away
02:40from hydrogenated oils, margarine,
02:43soybean oil, vegetable oils,
02:44those types of oils you definitely wanna stay away from.
02:46All right, so bacon, trans fats, right?
02:50The whole egg.
02:50And so healthier fats,
02:53all right, so if we take this as our basic formula,
02:55you also understand this right now,
02:57your body will then begin to burn
02:59the fat that you have on it.
03:00It has to, no choice.
03:02Yes.
03:02If that's what you found in your life,
03:03that's how you got rid of that,
03:04that's how you got that six pack.
03:05Is there a six pack?
03:06Let me see this.
03:07Oh, I wasn't prepared for this.
03:08One, two, three, four, five, six.
03:12All right, so forget about embarrassing me.
03:14I've got Kendi here who matters more.
03:16Kendi is thinking about coming on a ketogenic diet.
03:18How are you, Kendi?
03:19Good, how are you, Dr. Oz?
03:21So you just heard George explain a little bit
03:23about this diet, about what's getting you
03:26thinking about doing this?
03:27Bacon, first of all.
03:28Bacon?
03:29I just said not to eat bacon all day.
03:31I can have bacon.
03:33Well, you can have some bacon, right?
03:34Some bacon, yeah.
03:35But not only bacon.
03:36Well, you know, the thing that really excites me is,
03:39you know, I have been trying to lose this 35 pounds
03:43through the past year.
03:44I've tried every diet.
03:45I've tried shakes.
03:47I've tried low carb.
03:48I exercise regularly and nothing's working.
03:51So I'm really excited to see what this can do for me.
