00:00Have you always wanted to be a director?
00:05I've always wanted to be a director.
00:08Ever since I was a child.
00:10There are a whole bunch of directors from
00:13Rishida, Vimal Roy, Mehboob Khan,
00:20Manmohan Desai, Billy Wilder, Steven Spielberg, so many.
00:24But I've always wanted to be a director.
00:26What are you most excited about?
00:56Ranveer, Praveen, Tara. Unfortunately, Mr. Nischal is not here.
01:02We were such a wonderful team, Dibakar and Jaydeep, our writer. We had seen it together.
01:09And that feeling when we saw it together and we were looking into each other's faces and saying,
01:13We did something very special. Something very special was made. So, I'm excited to do that once again.
01:18Number one. But number two and more importantly, I would be very thrilled to see a whole new generation of youngsters
01:25who have seen it in bits and pieces on television will get to see it in its proper form in cinema.
01:35And the power of this film is it being so durable that over the years its relatability is not just about,
01:44as we mentioned in another interview, it's not about a scam. The scam is just an excuse to tell a story about a family.
01:52And those stories never die. They never become stale. But this particular film, I don't like using the word cult film.
02:00Something odd about that word. But it does have a durability that is very rare in cinema.
02:07So, I would love a new generation to see that these kind of movies will last forever.
02:12That if they stick to making and watching, making and watching quality films,
02:17they will always be rewarded 20, 25, 30 years from now.
02:26101%. You have to understand that one feels that only movies that are youthful and glitzy are the ones that work.
02:43No, film, a good film is a good story. It's not a flavor of a season. This is not the flavor of the season kind of movie.
02:52It will be, it will be relatable to any generation. I am more than convinced about this because over the years…
03:01Look, back in the day, I mean, there are so many films, you know, from Paan Singh Tomar to many, many foreign films
03:15that when they were first released, nobody paid attention to it. In fact, they were not released.
03:20And when they did get released, it takes a little time for people to recognize a film which is different from everything else.
03:30So, this film was different from the films that were being released back in the day.
03:35And I think that anything that is, I have realized over the years, that when you have plenty, you take things for granted.
03:43When your hand is tight, you want to prove something and you give off your best.
03:50And that's exactly what happened with Kosala Gosala. The team stuck together.
03:54We stuck together like a family through thick and thin. And I think we made something together.
04:02And hardships are good. If you have plenty, somehow you don't appreciate.
04:10You don't appreciate the good things in life when you get it in small doses.
04:14So, it was a difficult film to make. Let's make no mistake about it. It was a film that few people believed in.
04:22Our producers, our director, our writer and the team, we all stuck together through whatever we went through.
04:34So, I'll be very honest with you and I think it's time. I was honest then, I'm honest now.
04:39I, it was not just I, but it was lot of people genuinely felt that I may have been not the best choice to play Khurana, Kishan Khurana.
04:53And they are probably right. I'm from Bombay, Mumbai. I had no access to the Khuranas of the world.
05:03To the property usurpers. And so, in many ways, I had to learn about an alien culture that I was not familiar with.
05:16So, I had to go to Delhi and do research and hang out with people and get a lot of the nuance that many people felt I would not be able to capture.
05:28Like there was one guy who had auditioned for the role. And he was a fine, fine actor, let me tell you.
05:35And he met me and said, you know, aapko kaise lagega agar main Bombay aake koi Parsi ka character play karun?
05:43Aapko toh bura hi lagega. Toh maine bola aapne sahi baat batai. Because I know how it is.
05:49So, I told him and I used to meet him in the evenings and I asked him to teach me. My director, Dibakar, helped me a lot.
05:58But this gentleman really, really helped me too with the nuance of getting the Khurana right.
06:05If you can ask Mr. Kher, maybe he may have not been convinced whether I was the right choice.
06:13I may have been the complete wrong choice, but that is exactly the reason why you work harder to prove people wrong.
06:20And more than anyone else, not to prove people wrong, to prove myself wrong.
06:24If I felt I was the wrong choice and I said, let's work towards it, there will be a reward.
06:29So, that was the reason one has to work that much harder.
06:34How do you feel about winning the National Award?
06:38Well, it feels almost as if the whole team is getting the National Award.
06:43Because it was again an ensemble cast. Neena ji did an amazing role and amazingly portrayed.
06:52And of course, Suraj ji, I am nobody to speak about his legendary status as a filmmaker, as a human being,
07:01as a person who stands for all that is good in this country, all that is good in families, all that is good in friendship.
07:08He is a great cinematic and human representative of all that is good in this world.
07:16And he made a film about good people and goodness and friendships and honesty and kindness.
07:23So, I am thrilled that he has got this honour and I am thrilled that Neena ji has got the honour.
07:29We all, if you see, Mr. Kher is also part of that team, Danny sahab, Mr. Bachchan, Sarika ji, we are so thrilled.
