Agatha All Along Costumes: A Breakdown of THAT Scene

A deep dive look into the costume choreography that had to take place for THAT scene in episode one, as told by Agatha All Along costume designer, Daniel Selon.

00:00The transformational quality of this storytelling is what I think makes it special.

00:14Hey everybody, I'm Daniel Salon. I am the costume designer on Agatha.

00:19I love that she starts with her head in her hands here.

00:22It was kind of how we felt shooting this on the day.

00:27It was a very intense day schedule-wise.

00:30We had to get through a lot in order to accomplish it, and we did it all in one day.

00:35And that required an intense schedule.

00:39Like, we actually sort of scheduled out every minute of the day

00:44because we had to convince everyone between Cindy Wells, the hair designer,

00:49and Vasilios Tanis, the makeup designer, that we could accomplish it.

00:52Production was really concerned that we wouldn't be able to get through all of the looks.

00:57And it meant that we had to very specifically choreograph

01:03which garments she was going to wear under which garment.

01:07And then if she pulled the purple sweater up, what would it reveal?

01:11And could we cheat the pants so that she was already wearing the pants for the 80s look?

01:17So it was complicated.

01:18It was kind of like making a game plan.

01:21We did some sort of war room planning.

01:24And we had the hair and makeup room just above this set

01:28where we would run up the stairs and quick change her.

01:31The scarf here was super important to me.

01:34I really wanted there to be a texture that sort of hinted at where we were going

01:41as we went onto the road, which the textures of everything become much more elaborate.

01:46I remember standing with Catherine while she was getting wired

01:50and we had to rehearse the actual removing of the scarf over and over and over again.

01:56We had to choreograph it really so that it looked natural

02:01but also worked in the moment and didn't fluster her too much so that she could focus.

02:06The scarf choreography was important because it sort of set the entire tone

02:13of the dance that Catherine had to choreograph to do this.

02:18Here it comes.

02:20We didn't actually shoot it in the order that is in the scene.

02:24And the order that was dictated for filming was because of the hair and makeup and costume changes.

02:30So it was a big day for our departments.

02:33So here we are revealing the 2010s from WandaVision in the purple sweater which she ends WandaVision in.

02:39And then the reveal of the 2000s.

02:42The Malcolm in the middle.

02:44There's the juicy couture.

02:46The naughty couture in our case.

02:48And then she was going to unzip and then we would see the little cheat of the 80s.

02:54So good.

02:56Maybe my favorite wig actually.

02:58And she did so many of these takes where she lifted her head up into the mirror to see the 70s.

03:03And here she's trying to get it off but she actually can't

03:06because that is all one piece.

03:08Dress.

03:10With the push.

03:12The psycho lamp is so good.

03:14And here's the big reveal.

03:16Back into the 50s.

03:18So technically we actually skipped the 60s in this sequence.

03:21But we felt like this told the story fully.

03:25And there she is feeling herself just like we know her from WandaVision

03:29which is so satisfying to have the character take this entire episode to get to this moment.

03:34I love this realization.

03:37And the close up on this hand.

03:39Seeing this sort of colorless skin in this saturated color environment.

03:46It's just so spooky.

03:49This was a fun moment where she undoes this and it's like wait where's she going?

03:54This is the first look that we've seen her in.

03:56And here.

03:58And this.

03:59Our inspiration for this was of course Lady Godiva.

04:02As far as how we were going to do the hair and cover her up appropriately.

04:06But really it was about a rebirth.
