00:00It was a tragedy at the end of his career that his own party, his own

00:05government, turned on him and I'm not going to elaborate on that today. This is

00:09not the right place for it. But what I will do, Mr. Speaker, is put on the

00:14record the comment made today by his lawyer, David McKee, who represented him

00:20through these really, really difficult times of his life, when he said Alex's

00:25courage and strength of character over the three-year period from the Scottish

00:29government launching an unlawful process against him throughout his

00:32criminal trial, in which he was cleared of all charges by a jury of his peers, to his

00:37unimpeachable evidence to the parliamentary inquiry, was absolutely

00:41incredible. What he endured, the apparatus of the state turned against him, would

00:46have broken many people, but not Alex. I will always remember a truly incredible

00:52human being, with remarkable insight, strength of personality and a stoic

00:57restraint which many others could not contemplate. Alex was a very proud son

01:04of Scotland, but he was also a son of this House of which we ourselves should

01:10be proud. So I finish, Mr. Speaker, by offering my condolences, my heartfelt

01:17wishes to Maura and the rest of his family and all his wide circle of friends.
