Romanian authorities beef up preventative measures after devastating flooding

Local officials in Galați put the total cost for repairs in the county at around €150 million and say the region could be faced with a similar price tag every time flooding happens.

00:07last month left seven people dead and around 7,000 homes water damaged.

00:12The county council said it's looking at relocating houses that sit on floodplains and starting

00:17to repair extensive damage across the region.

00:20The council put the total cost for repairs in the county at around 150 million euros

00:25and says the region could be faced with a similar price tag every time there's torrential

00:30rain.

00:31Many in the region are already nervous as Romanian meteorologists have already said

00:35that similar deluges are likely in the future.

00:39Some locals are demanding firm action from the regional authorities as many people have

00:43had to rebuild their homes after extensive flooding on three previous occasions.

00:48In addition to the damage to homes, roads need to be rebuilt and vast swathes of agricultural

00:53land remain waterlogged.

00:55Local authorities say at least 80 percent of residents in the eastern county have been

01:00forced to move.
