00:00What a guy, I'm banging on the street. What a guy, I'm loose on the beat.
00:11Stop!
00:19Welcome back, you're all alone again.
00:22No I'm not.
00:23This is Mobile Suit Gundam Silver Phantom by Bandai Namco Filmworks, Atlas V and Albion.
00:32And it was released 3rd October 2024.
00:36The movie.
00:38Even though I live in Japan, I'm not into any anime at all.
00:42So when I bought this, my mind was a clean slate. No expectations.
00:47I wasn't really sure how to review this because it's like a movie and a game.
00:51But here goes.
00:53The movie seems like a typical hero love movie that the Japanese love doing.
00:58And it looks fantastic.
01:00The VR moments are just superb.
01:03And I was just fixated on the characters and the inside of the robot suits.
01:08And just how great they looked.
01:10There is also a few cut scenes where it's in 360.
01:14But it still looks fantastic.
01:16The camera keeps jumping around to different shots for different points of view.
01:19So you won't have to move your head around so much.
01:22But you will probably find you will still look around because it just looks so good.
01:27Now, it also has interactive parts to it.
01:30Mainly sword fights.
01:32But there is some shooting to be done.
01:34Dodging by moving your head to a fixated point.
01:37Clearing debris.
01:39It gets you involved, but not too heavily.
01:42Game menus.
01:44Game menus are all very basic.
01:45Settings that offer you two types of voices.
01:48A language select.
01:50Language text.
01:52And subtitles on or off.
01:54And then there's chapter select.
01:56And some other stuff like interactive games.
01:58And a view the suits.
02:00Also, I found it annoying that if I had to stop and restart the movie.
02:04It wouldn't just pick up from where I left off.
02:06You had to re-watch from the start of a particular chapter.
02:10And whilst looking in the chapter select.
02:12There's no way of knowing where you are.
02:15Size.
02:17So you are getting around a 90 minute movie.
02:20And most of it being set in space.
02:22And from inside the Gundam suit.
02:24There are glimpses of other scenes like on the ship and around a planet.
02:29But most of the 360 cut scenes take place in new settings.
02:33And those are kind of things I'd have liked to have seen in the virtual reality as well.
02:39It's because the anime looks so good that you want to see more of it.
02:43Controls.
02:45Controls should have been better.
02:47Instead of having to push and pull levers beside you.
02:50To control shields.
02:52And to swipe your sword.
02:54They could have made it so you use your actual quest controllers.
02:58But otherwise, the controls on everything else is just fine.
03:02Mechanics.
03:04The movie looks great in VR.
03:06And also whilst in 360.
03:08I'm not a huge fan of having so many loading screens though.
03:12I think there was just a little too many.
03:15But the story was clear and easy.
03:18The interactive parts worked well.
03:20Though sometimes a little tricky when using the levers in the suit.
03:24The mixed reality game is perfect.
03:27But I will say that the movie did crash twice whilst I was watching it.
03:33Playable characters.
03:35So whilst playing the mixed reality game.
03:38You get to play through a lot of Gundam suits and figures.
03:42Weapons.
03:43So weapons you will get to use throughout this game.
03:47And the movie.
03:49It will be a hand pistol, laser gun, sword, shield.
03:53Secondary weapon which is a rocket.
03:56And then a special weapon which is like a barrage of rockets.
04:00Mixed reality.
04:02I love the mixed reality game in this.
04:04You have three acts.
04:06Each act consisting of three levels.
04:09And then there's a grand finale.
04:11For each level you get to use a different Gundam figure.
04:16Battling off waves of attacks.
04:18You hold your Gundam figure like a child would.
04:21Waving it about through the air.
04:23Dodging bullets and rockets.
04:25All whilst squeezing your trigger button to shoot the enemies.
04:29Or push up on your gun stick to load up the sword attack.
04:33Then you can use A button to launch your secondary weapon.
04:36And also B button to launch your special weapon.
04:39You also have ammo and shields to collect to aid you to that win.
04:44My thoughts.
04:46I do really like what they have attempted to do here.
04:49But for me personally.
04:51I would rather the movie just be a movie.
04:54Without the interactive stuff.
04:56Keep that separate and make a few mini games instead.
04:59Like they did with the mixed reality game.
05:02They could have made it so you can actually view the suits.
05:06Like they have actually done.
05:07But then made it so you can actually get into the suits.
05:11View the insides of them.
05:13And walk around in them.
05:15Maybe fire off some of the weapons in a gun range or something.
05:19I think this would have really appealed to a lot of the fans of the series.
05:23And still appeal to non-fans.
05:26So do you have to be a hardcore Gundam fan to enjoy this?
05:30No. I don't believe so.
05:32I think fans might appreciate it more.
05:34But I think even if you are not a fan.
05:37You will still enjoy the experience.
05:40I would have liked to have seen way more VR in the movie.
05:44And definitely more locations.
05:46But in general.
05:48This is a great idea.
05:50I quite enjoy watching the short 5-10 minute VR cartoons on my headset.
05:55So a full movie is just a fantastic attempt.
05:59I really do hope to see many more anime movies come to VR in the near future.
06:04So with that.
06:06I mark Mobile Suit Gundam an 8.4 stars.

06:34Bye.
