Rescuers save people from Milton's flooding in Volusia County

AccuWeather correspondent Leslie Hudson reported from the scene of ongoing water rescues in Volusia County in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.

00:00Here in South Daytona, it has been a steady stream of water rescues all

00:05around this county. Now you can see over my shoulder there is actually an airboat

00:09coming out with some people right now. We have seen this story play out over and

00:14over again here in South Daytona. Folks that were calling 9-1-1 early this

00:19morning, as early as 2 and 3 a.m., but rescue crews could not get to them

00:24because it was just too dangerous. In fact, Volusia County officials tell us

00:29it's an ongoing problem. They themselves could not get out into their own homes

00:35to get their crews on the streets to help these people. Basically, we got shut

00:40down overnight due to wind speeds. A lot of our first responders went home, got

00:44some rest, and then once, you know, daybreak kind of, you know, came to us and

00:48with the flooding situation, we now had to go out and basically rescue them. Now

00:52multiple people were taken to convenience stores around this county

00:56because they did not have any shelters open to take them to. They now are at

01:01shelters. Here's what one of the evacuees had to say about her scary

01:04times this morning. What Floridians do, it's what we're used to, unfortunately. I

01:11mean, we, and everybody's been great. Like, my neighbors all came out worried,

01:16shouting, making sure everybody was okay. I made sure my direct neighbors got

01:21looked at first because they're a lot older, but everybody came out. Everybody

01:26was great, and the officers were great, giving water my dog. So Volusia County

01:32will continue with their water rescues throughout the day. Officials do say it

01:35will take several days for these water levels to go down, and that means it

01:40could be several days before folks can actually get out and start that long

01:43process of trying to clean up and start over. Reporting in South Daytona, I'm
