00:00The G7 has placed at the center of its work the theme of dementia in continuity with what
00:11has already been addressed in Japan in the previous edition.
00:15Italy, with Japan and the other Western countries, shares the fact that we have a population
00:20that is aging rapidly.
00:22It is estimated that in the next ten years, Italy will also be able to reach 30% of people
00:27over the age of 65.
00:29It is evident that in this context all the related pathologies become particularly relevant.
00:36And there is no doubt that dementia, as well as Alzheimer's disease, is one of those
00:41pathologies for which we are paying attention to our interventions today.
00:46Why?
00:47Because we still do not have a therapy or effective treatments, because once again we
00:53have to understand what the mechanisms are.
00:56Although it is true that in recent years we have understood much more, from the point
01:00of view of possible therapies.
01:04Among these, certainly some drugs that other agencies, not in Europe, have approved.
01:12There is the issue of prevention, and at the G7 we will talk about prevention of Alzheimer's
01:17disease and dementia, but there is also the issue of early diagnosis, that is, of that
01:23incredible progress that today allows us to be able to identify patients much at the beginning
01:30of their path of the disease, and that perhaps one day we will also be able to intercept,
01:36predict, when people are still not sick.
01:40This is because the numbers of dementia are increasing, they are increasing with the increase
01:46of aging, and because the costs are currently already very high and risk being much higher
01:53Today we are talking about about 23 billion euros, the annual expense for the management
02:00of the phenomenon of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, and it is estimated that by 2050
02:06these costs may double.
02:09There is also a lot to do in terms of assistance, and there is no doubt that our country, Italy,
02:16is at the forefront, not only because of the universal health system that everyone still envies us,
02:22but also because this system, which is currently subject to maintenance, but also to interventions,
02:31is trying to combine sustainability with efficiency and health responses.
02:39And there is no doubt that on dementia, as well as other chronic diseases, the Ministry of Health,
02:45together with all the operators, are strongly intervening.
02:48So it is not surprising that at G7 we will talk about Alzheimer's disease, we will talk about strategies,
02:55we will talk about prevention, we will also talk about technology, and we will also talk about therapies.
03:01And on treatments, there is no doubt that our country will also contribute, from the point of view
03:07of research, and certainly at the forefront, from the point of view of scientific productivity,
03:13and sooner or later, also in Italy, we will be able, as we do today in China, in Japan, in Australia,
03:19in Great Britain and in the United States, to have access to drugs for the treatment of the disease.
03:26At G7, the European Academy of Neurologists, the Italian Society of Neurology, in coherence with the World Health Organization,
03:33wanted to bring the topic of brain health from Ancona, and we decided to make Ancona
03:39the European city for brain health.
03:43So Ancona becomes the point of reference of a new project that sees Italy, together with other countries,
03:52there are not many in the world that have adopted a manifesto, among them Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Finland,
04:01India recently, Denmark probably in the coming months.
04:05So the perception, the sensitivity and the awareness that we all have to work together for the health of the brain is growing.
