00:10magnificent creatures on our planet, the Queen Alexandra's Birdwing Butterfly. Known as the

00:16world's largest butterfly, this incredible insect can have a wingspan of up to 12 inches.

00:22Imagine a butterfly as big as a dinner plate fluttering gracefully through the air.

00:27These butterflies are native to the lush rainforests of Papua New Guinea,

00:31specifically in the Oro Province. They thrive in the humid,

00:35tropical climate where they can find their favorite food source, the Aristolochia vine.

00:40The caterpillars feed on the toxic leaves of the Aristolochia vine,

00:44making themselves poisonous to predators.

00:48The Queen Alexandra's Birdwing goes through a remarkable metamorphosis,

00:52transforming from egg to caterpillar, then to chrysalis, and finally, into a stunning adult

00:58butterfly. From egg to adult, the entire process takes several months. The adult butterfly lives

01:04for around three months. In those few months, they play a vital role in pollination and

01:09maintaining the health of their rainforest habitat. Females are significantly larger than males.

01:15Males sport a striking blue and green pattern, while females are usually brown with white

01:19markings. Unfortunately, Queen Alexandra's Birdwing butterflies are considered endangered

01:25due to habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts are ongoing

01:30to protect these incredible insects and their natural habitats.
