00:00Make sure that you spend time on things
00:02that give you a lot of return.
00:04Don't spend time on things that give you little return.
00:06Picking up a new skill can change your life totally.
00:09If you just try and improve your life by 1% every day,
00:13the effect over many years is extreme, is massive.
00:16Every day, try and just learn something new.
00:19That you're not too young,
00:20you're not too old to do something.
00:22Before we even get started,
00:31I wanna emphasize that you need to believe in yourself.
00:34You need to believe that you can change your life in 2023.
00:38You need to believe that you have the ability
00:40and the capability to do this.
00:42You need to ignore the haters.
00:44You need to ignore the people that have told you
00:46at school or at other times in your life
00:48that you can't do it.
00:49You need to get your mind in the right place
00:51and believe in yourself.
00:52And I'm telling you, you can.
00:54If I can do it, you can do it.
00:56I can't tell you the number of people
00:58that have told me during my life
00:59or over the years of my life
01:01that David, you're an idiot.
01:02David, you can't do it.
01:04David, I'm putting you into this box.
01:05This is the kind of person that you are.
01:07You can't be this person.
01:08You can't be a YouTuber because you're too old.
01:10You can't be an instructor
01:11because you're not intelligent enough.
01:13You don't speak with the right accent.
01:15You don't have the right education,
01:16et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
01:17Ignore those haters.
01:19Ignore those people.
01:20Go out there and make the most of your life.
01:23What are you gonna do in 2023 to change your life?
01:27In this video, I wanna talk about the five top skills
01:29that you need to get in 2023 if you haven't already.
01:32It's really important that you ride the waves.
01:35I've said this many, many times
01:37and I've done this many, many times in my life.
01:39Look at what the hot trends are.
01:41Jump on those waves and ride them.
01:43So I wanna talk about sort of five areas
01:45that I really think you should look at
01:47if you haven't already in 2023.
01:49And then look at the skills
01:50that you need to get to ride those waves.
01:53You can't change the past, but you can change your future.
01:56And for me, that's what I love about technology
01:58or tech in general.
01:59You don't need a fancy degree.
02:01You don't need fancy contacts.
02:03You don't need to be part of a old boys club, as an example,
02:06to get somewhere in technology.
02:07If you put in the effort,
02:08in a few years you can change your life
02:11because technology is changing all the time.
02:13Look at me, I got my CCIE maybe 20 years ago.
02:16What was really, really important 20 years ago
02:19or 10 years ago or five years ago
02:21isn't really important necessarily in 2023.
02:24The hot technologies of those days are perhaps gone.
02:28Things are constantly evolving, constantly changing,
02:31which can make it harder
02:32if you've been in tech for a long time to keep up.
02:34But the great news for someone like you
02:37who's perhaps starting out is that if you start today,
02:39in two years time, you could be an expert
02:41in a specific sphere or niche, if you like.
02:44Think about the blockchain.
02:45Didn't exist a few years ago.
02:46Think about machine learning, AI.
02:49That is changing the world in the last few years.
02:5210 years ago, 20 years ago, that wasn't really important
02:54compared to how important it is in the next few years.
02:57Jump on the waves, ride those waves and change your life.
03:01Now I'm gonna continue talking about mindset a little bit
03:03and giving you some advice from my experience.
03:05But if you don't wanna hear that, that's fine.
03:07Use the timestamps below to jump ahead in the video.
03:10It's important to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.
03:13When you're starting out, it can be overwhelming
03:16because there's so much information, so much to learn.
03:18But I'm telling you now, you don't have to try
03:21and learn everything like that.
03:23Firstly, that's impossible.
03:24And secondly, there's just too much
03:26to learn very, very quickly.
03:27The more you learn, the more you'll find it's easier
03:29to learn additional skills or pick up additional skills,
03:32learn new technologies, because a lot of it's interrelated.
03:35As an example, I have a strong foundation in networking.
03:37For me to move into another area isn't that difficult
03:41because I've got a strong foundation
03:42in networking, programming, et cetera.
03:44It's much easier to pick up new technologies.
03:46But I want you to remember that life is a journey
03:49and your path may change over time.
03:51You may be doing this today,
03:53but then tomorrow you do something totally different.
03:55And there's nothing stopping you reinventing yourself.
03:58You could be the expert in this area,
03:59and then tomorrow or in a few years time,
04:01you're the expert in another area
04:02because technologies change
04:03and you have to change with the technologies.
04:06If people tell you you must stay where you're at,
04:09they've either not been in tech long enough
04:11or they've stagnated because stagnation is a terrible thing.
04:13You've got to keep on reinventing yourself.
04:15You've got to keep on learning
04:17and changing what you're doing.
04:18If you had told me five years ago
04:20that I'd have a million subscribers on YouTube,
04:22I probably wouldn't have believed you.
04:24You've got to keep on improving what you're doing
04:26and keep on learning.
04:27So to help you with that,
04:28I want to talk about some principles.
04:29First thing I really believe in is circle of control.
04:32You may not be able to control what governments are doing
04:35or what certain people in the world are doing.
04:37I don't watch a lot of news
04:38because it can be really depressing.
04:41You can't change what people
04:42on the other side of the world are doing.
04:44As an example, I live in the UK.
04:46I can't change what the US president is doing.
04:48So I don't focus on that.
04:49I focus on the stuff that I can control.
04:52I can control my time.
04:53If you've got a job
04:54and you have to work a certain number of hours,
04:56your boss could control that,
04:57but you may have some flexibility there
04:59to decide what you do with your time.
05:01And after work, what are you doing with your time?
05:03What are you doing with your time on weekends?
05:05Work your ass off.
05:07There is no magic pill.
05:09It drives me crazy to go to the gym.
05:11You read one hour a day.
05:13I went and worked out five hours a day.
05:16And I was working on construction with 24 hours a day.
05:20Organize your day, work hard.
05:22As an example for me,
05:23and I'm not telling you that this is what you have to do,
05:25I don't watch television
05:27because it can be a huge time sink,
05:29as in take a huge amount of time.
05:31I'd rather use my time for other things.
05:33You need to decide what's important for you
05:35and prioritize what's important for you.
05:37But the point is, is that you can control your time.
05:39You can decide where you spend your time.
05:41So don't spend time on things that give you no return.
05:44Rather spend time on things
05:46that will give you a long return.
05:48As an example, I learned about networking
05:50many, many years ago,
05:51and that's helped me over 20 years, as an example.
05:54The stuff that I learned 20 years ago
05:56are still helping me today
05:57because it's a foundation that I build upon.
05:59Rather spend your time learning something
06:02that can help you for the future.
06:03Another important principle is the 80-20 rule,
06:06also known as the Pareto principle.
06:0880% of consequences come from 20% of causes.
06:11As an example, in business,
06:1220% of your customers give you 80% of your revenue.
06:15If you make sure that you focus your time on the 20%,
06:19you're gonna have a far greater return
06:21than focusing your time on things less important.
06:24As an example, if you watch a television program,
06:27just some kind of entertainment,
06:28that could give you relaxation now,
06:31but what's the return on that?
06:32What's the long-term return on that?
06:34Versus, for instance, reading a book
06:36that changes your mindset,
06:37or watching a video that teaches you something.
06:40That could give you a return over your whole lifetime.
06:43You could learn something about investing.
06:44You could learn something about technology,
06:46and that could give you return after return
06:49after return after return throughout your entire life.
06:52Make sure that you spend time on things
06:54that give you a lot of return.
06:56Don't spend time on things that give you little return.
06:58Picking up a new skill can change your life totally.
07:01As an example, learning a programming language like Python
07:03can be used for years and years and years and years.
07:06Once you learn how to code,
07:07you might use Python for a while, or for many years,
07:10or you may move on to another programming language,
07:13but you've got over that hurdle
07:15of learning a programming language.
07:17The return on that investment can be massive.
07:19Learning Linux, as an example,
07:21can give you a massive return over your lifetime.
07:24Spend time on things that give you a big return.
07:27Don't spend time on things that give you little return.
07:30A book that I often recommend is Atomic Habits.
07:32James Clear in the book talks about the 1% principle,
07:35if you like, or 1% rule,
07:37that if you just try and improve your life by 1% every day,
07:41the effect over many years is extreme, is massive.
07:44Every day, spend a bit of time learning.
07:46Try and learn something new every day,
07:49and it's amazing how that exponentially grows your knowledge
07:52and opens up opportunities for you.
07:54I've picked up many skills over the years.
07:56Some of them would be technical skills
07:58like networking, programming.
07:59Some of them would be business skills
08:01or just other kinds of skills like how to use YouTube.
08:04So I have YouTube skills, I have social media skills.
08:07I keep on learning,
08:09keep on trying to develop myself in multiple areas,
08:13and that knowledge becomes exponential
08:15and can really change things.
08:16Another good book is Deep Work.
08:17Very difficult for some people,
08:19but often you need to put away distractions.
08:22Get rid of your phone, turn off your notifications,
08:24stuff like that.
08:25Put it away and make sure that you spend time every day
08:29doing deep work.
08:30In other words, hard study.
08:31A term that could be used for me is a creator.
08:33I'm a content creator.
08:34Content doesn't get created by me checking emails
08:38or by looking at the notifications on my phone.
08:40I often turn off all notifications,
08:43block myself out from the rest of the world,
08:46and try and spend time creating content
08:48where I'm not distracted.
08:50I need to turn off notifications
08:51because can you imagine me trying to create
08:53a YouTube video like this
08:54and then getting constant messages?
08:55I need to turn off the notifications and the messages
08:57so that I can create content.
08:59You may not be a content creator,
09:01but how do you think you're going to study
09:03something difficult if you don't turn off the notifications
09:06and spend time learning?
09:07You've got to do some deep work.
09:09Some books that I'd recommend that you look at
09:11is the 4-Hour Workweek.
09:13Some people don't like the title,
09:14but there are a lot of good principles in that book.
09:16Think about principles like the 80-20 principle,
09:19Circle of Control.
09:19Think about 1% Deep Work.
09:21Great books to look at
09:23that can really change things in your life.
09:25You need to make the effort, however,
09:27in 2023 to do things differently
09:30to what you did in the past.
09:31As that saying goes,
09:32it's insanity to do the same thing over and over
09:34and expect a different result.
09:36Make sure that you do something different
09:37today, tomorrow, this year,
09:40if you're not getting the results that you want.
09:42Now, this year I'm doing it slightly differently
09:44to previous years.
09:45I want to talk about five core skills
09:47that you need to learn in 2023
09:49if you don't have these skills already.
09:50And as always, please put in the comments below
09:52if you disagree with what I'm saying.
09:54Now, before I talk about the top five skills,
09:56I want to talk about five paths.
09:58There's a lot of overlap with the skills
10:00that you would require for these different paths.
10:03The first path, which I think is really hot at the moment,
10:06and something that I would probably start looking at
10:09if I was just starting my journey today,
10:10is data science, machine learning, or AI.
10:13Just recently, ChatGPT has really blown up.
10:16A lot of interest in this AI.
10:18If you really want to ride the next wave,
10:20if you want to change your life,
10:22I would seriously look at data science,
10:24machine learning, AI.
10:26It doesn't matter which other sphere you're interested in.
10:28Perhaps you're interested in cybersecurity.
10:30That's been a very hot niche in the last few years.
10:32AI can put you in a different league to others.
10:35If you understand machine learning,
10:37if you understand data science,
10:38it can change your whole life.
10:40I would strongly suggest that you concentrate on that
10:42in 2023, and what I'm planning to do this year
10:45is create a lot of videos around this topic.
10:47This will change many, many industries.
10:50It already has, and it's gonna continue to do that
10:53more and more and more.
10:54The ChatGPT software is just one example of what's possible.
10:58It's amazing what that AI can do.
11:01In my previous video, I put it to the test
11:03in cybersecurity, in programming, in networking,
11:06and it was amazing what it can do.
11:08Have a look at that video below if you're interested,
11:10but AI is gonna change things.
11:11Now, if that's not of interest to you,
11:12have a look at dev or programming.
11:14There is always gonna be a demand
11:16for developers in the world.
11:17Now, think about the devices
11:18that most people have with them.
11:20Could be an iPhone, could be an Android phone.
11:21These devices run on software.
11:24People don't use their phones necessarily
11:26to make phone calls.
11:27They use them for the apps.
11:28So if you're interested in getting into programming,
11:30I would strongly look at app development,
11:33specifically on iOS, specifically on Android.
11:36Fantastic place to make a good career for yourself,
11:38but perhaps you wanna write applications
11:40for Windows or Mac or other platforms,
11:43but look at development.
11:44I've interviewed Dr. Chuck multiple times.
11:47Have a look at the videos below.
11:48He gives you a free path to becoming a developer.
11:52He'll teach you Python.
11:53He'll teach you C.
11:54He'll teach you SQL.
11:56He teaches you a whole bunch of skills
11:58that you would need if you wanna become a developer.
12:00Perhaps you can't pay for an expensive school.
12:01You don't wanna go and do a computer science degree.
12:03Have a look at these free videos
12:05which help you become a developer.
12:07Again, very, very hot in recent times is cybersecurity.
12:10There's a big need for security professionals.
12:13Many, many more jobs on the blue team side
12:15rather than the red team side.
12:16Companies need to be secure.
12:18There's always gonna be a need
12:19for people interested in cybersecurity,
12:21so that's a great place to look.
12:23Cloud is huge.
12:24Amazon, we've got Google, we've got Microsoft.
12:27I would specifically look at Amazon
12:29if you're not sure which of the three to look at,
12:31but cloud is big, only getting bigger.
12:34More and more companies are moving their servers
12:37from on-premise to the cloud, so have a look at the cloud.
12:40Another hot one to look at is blockchain,
12:42and I'm not talking about Bitcoin.
12:44I'm not talking about cryptocurrencies.
12:46Have a look at blockchain for smart contracts.
12:49Now, you don't have to focus on just one of these.
12:51You could, for instance, be interested in cybersecurity,
12:55so perhaps looking at hacking the blockchain
12:58or helping companies secure the blockchain.
13:00Very good areas, but I wanted to give you some bonus areas.
13:03Have a look at APIs.
13:04They've become very hot in recent times.
13:06Some people will say, well, APIs are part of programming,
13:09so if you're a programmer, you have to learn about APIs,
13:11but I wanted to put this as a bonus
13:13because APIs are also really important
13:16with regards to cybersecurity.
13:17If you wanna become an ethical hacker,
13:19hacking APIs is a great place to start.
13:21APIs are used a lot in networking as well these days,
13:24so APIs are really important,
13:26and let me talk about networking.
13:28It's very sad for me to say this,
13:29but I don't think networking is a high-growth industry
13:32for the coming years.
13:33It's become very mature.
13:34It's a great, stable place to get a job,
13:37but it's not high growth,
13:38so if you wanna ride the next wave or the future,
13:41get into the hot stuff, then networking is foundational.
13:44It's really important, used by many of these other trends,
13:48but it isn't the hottest place to get a job.
13:50If you wanna go for a hot trend,
13:51have a look at data science or machine learning or AI.
13:54Have a look at some of the other sort of spheres.
13:56Networking, I would say, is a stable industry,
13:59but not high growth.
14:00Another bonus is IoT, Internet of Things.
14:02I mean, are you gonna become a developer
14:03that writes code for IoT?
14:05Perhaps you're gonna get into cybersecurity
14:07and hack IoT devices.
14:09These devices are just proliferating everywhere.
14:11We have smart homes.
14:13The lights that I'm using here are so-called smart lights.
14:16Smart devices are taking over the world.
14:18More and more devices, washing machines, toasters,
14:21et cetera, et cetera, are becoming smart.
14:23If you're into hacking, again,
14:25fantastic area to look at, or perhaps coding.
14:27So there are five paths that I would suggest you look at.
14:30Now, let's talk about the five core skills
14:33that you need to get.
14:34Let's say you're interested in machine learning
14:35or you're interested in cybersecurity, any of these spheres.
14:38One of the foundational skills that you need is Linux.
14:41Now, I've been saying this for years.
14:43Learn Linux, learn Linux, learn Linux,
14:45and I'll still say it in 2023.
14:47Learn Linux if you haven't learned it already.
14:49The world runs on Linux.
14:51If you're into hacking or cybersecurity,
14:53think of Kali Linux, think of Parrot OS.
14:56Just think of the tools that you need.
14:57They run on Linux.
14:58If you're into machine learning, AI, Linux, once again.
15:02If you're into networking, networking devices
15:04often run or have a basis on Linux.
15:07Cloud runs on Linux.
15:08I mean, I can just repeat myself over and over again.
15:11You need to learn Linux.
15:12This is a paradigm shift for a lot of people.
15:14Don't be a consumer, be a creator.
15:16When you learn to code, it changes everything
15:19because you can create your own tools.
15:20You're not limited by the tools available
15:23that others have created.
15:24Best programming language to probably start with is Python.
15:26If you haven't got any coding experience, look at Python,
15:29but very soon after that, look at Golang, look at Rust.
15:32Rust is the language I would suggest you look at
15:35if you're serious about becoming a developer or coder.
15:38If you're in cybersecurity, if you're into machine learning,
15:41Python is a great place to start,
15:43great place to learn.
15:45It'll really help you in your career,
15:47but also have a look at Golang, have a look at Rust
15:49soon after you've learned Python.
15:51Now, another foundational skill is networking.
15:53Basically, the world runs on a network, the internet.
15:56Internet of things means networking.
15:58Cybersecurity means that you have to understand networking.
16:01You don't need to become a CCIE like me.
16:04You don't have to become even CCMP
16:06if you're not interested in networking per se.
16:08You're perhaps interested in something else,
16:10but you need to have an appreciation of networking.
16:13You need to understand an IP address.
16:14You need to understand port numbers.
16:15Have a understanding of networking as a foundational skill.
16:20Important in cybersecurity, just to understand
16:22what a port number is as an example or what an IP address is.
16:25The cloud foundational skill, once again,
16:27it's one of the hot training areas in the last few years,
16:30becoming more and more mature.
16:31You need to learn about the cloud.
16:33In the old days, we used to install applications
16:35on physical hardware.
16:36Now we put them in virtual machines,
16:38and that gets me to the next topic, virtualization,
16:41and that's changed now to Docker containers.
16:43So containers have become really hot.
16:45So have a look at virtualization.
16:46Make sure you have an appreciation
16:48or understanding of virtualization.
16:49If you work in cybersecurity,
16:51you're gonna wanna run Kali Linux, as an example,
16:54in a virtual machine.
16:55You need to understand what a virtual machine is,
16:56but you may wanna take it a step further
16:59and put that in a container, which is a lot more lightweight.
17:02Make sure that you learn virtual machines,
17:04Docker, and Kubernetes.
17:05Great foundational skills to learn in 2023
17:07if you haven't learned them already.
17:08A lot of repetition of previous years here,
17:11but this stuff is foundational.
17:13It's important.
17:14Right at the top, Linux.
17:15Make sure you learn Linux.
17:17Make sure you learn a programming language,
17:19even if it's just Python.
17:20Make sure that you understand core networking principles.
17:23Make sure that you understand the cloud.
17:24Make sure that you understand virtualization.
17:26As a suggestion,
17:27go and get the CompTIA certifications in these areas.
17:30So as an example, get Linux Plus from CompTIA.
17:33Get Network Plus for networking.
17:35Get Cloud Plus for the cloud, et cetera.
17:38There are a bunch of introductory certifications
17:40that you can get.
17:41Networking, if you wanna focus
17:42on becoming a network engineer,
17:44CCNA is still my recommendation.
17:46But if you wanna do cybersecurity,
17:47you may not be as focused on networking,
17:50so Network Plus is fine for that.
17:53Moral of the story is read books, go on YouTube.
17:55There are many, many places
17:57where you can get free content to learn these skills.
18:00You don't have to pay a lot of money to learn this stuff.
18:03Okay, but what are you gonna do in 2023?
18:05Are you gonna put the effort in?
18:06Are you gonna put the time in and learn this stuff
18:09and change your life in tech?
18:11The responsibility is on you.
18:12You need to decide what you're going to do.
18:14I'm going to continue learning.
18:16I'm not gonna stop learning.
18:17You can't stop learning if you wanna be in tech.
18:19You have to keep on learning.
18:20And for me personally,
18:21areas that I'm gonna really focus on in 2023
18:24is AI and development.
18:26I wanna get back to the old, old days
18:29of me doing development.
18:30I also wanna expand on the cybersecurity content,
18:33but specifically AI.
18:34I wanna put AI into different spheres.
18:37AI in cybersecurity, AI in programming,
18:39AI in many places.
18:41Big focus for me this year.
18:42As always, I wanna wish you all the very best in 2023.
18:45Go out there and make a success of your life.
18:48♪♪♪
