Glaciers in Switzerland are melting at an above-average rate

Swiss glaciers have lost an above-average percentage of their ice volume in the last two years, following high summer temperatures and low winter snowfall. teleSUR

00:00And on Tuesday, the Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland, GLAMOS, reported that glaciers

00:05continue melting down at an above-average rate despite a very snowy winter.

00:09Therefore, the attrition of the glaciers' volume has been around 1.2 cubic kilometers,

00:15that is 2.5 percent of the total, just by 2024.

00:18In addition, GLAMOS scientists noted that at the end of this year, the Swiss glacier

00:22will count up with 30 cubic kilometers less than by 2000, amounting to 46.4 cubic kilometers.

00:30Experts further revealed that substantial amounts of Saharan dust into the Alps polluted

00:34snow, which absorbed more heat and melted faster.

00:37Director of GLAMOS provided more details on the phenomenon.

00:44The year 24 was actually very good for the glaciers because we had a lot of snow in winter,

00:50but two very warm summer months, July and August, were very warm, especially at high altitudes.

00:57August was even the warmest month ever, for example at Jungfraujoch at 3,500 meters.

01:04And this has really resulted in a complete meltdown of these massive snow amounts of

01:09winter and finally, again, a loss of glacier ice.
