Deakin Warrnambool opens Hycel

The Australian-first hydrogen centre, the Hycel Technology Hub, was officially opened at the city's campus on October 1, 2024.

00:00I'm Professor Tiffany Walsh, I'm the Director of HiCell.

00:21HiCell is a technology hub that is dedicated to actually helping accelerate the uptake

00:27of hydrogen technologies by our Australian industry.

00:35This involves all sorts of things and it actually involves more than just research.

00:39So in addition to doing a lot of scale up, so helping industry take an idea that maybe

00:45works in the lab and scaling it up to pilot scale, we also provide the ability to train

00:52and upskill workers in the hydrogen economy.

00:55So this is really important, you can't have the tech if people don't know how to use it

00:59and so the training is really important.

01:04I think this brings huge benefits to Warrnambool because it attracts people who want to come

01:08and work in engineering, for example local students who want to study engineering and

01:13who want to discover career pathways, working in a really, in a growth area, right.

01:19This is decarbonisation of Australia's economy, it's going to take time and these students

01:24have the ability to be right at the forefront of it.
