New LNG system opens in Greece aiming to reduce reliance on Russian gas

The new project, funded in part by the European Commission aims to reduce southeastern Europe's dependence on Russian gas.

00:00A new natural gas system has opened in the Greek city of Alexandroupolis, consisting

00:05of a floating storage and regasification unit which converts liquefied natural gas back

00:10into gas.

00:12The project is expected to generate 382 million euros in CO2 emission and fuel switch savings

00:19by contributing to the replacement of coal and oil by gas.

00:23It also includes a system of submarine and land pipelines through which natural gas is

00:28imported into Greece and transported to Southeast Europe.

00:33What I can tell you is that Greece, with the existing and now Alexandroupolis infrastructure

00:40plus the investment made in the network, will have by early next year an export capacity

00:47of approximately 8.5 billion.

00:50Southeast Europe has remained one of the areas with the largest dependence on Russian gas.

00:56Building new infrastructure to import LNG from various countries strengthens Europe's

01:01resilience and reduces reliance on this single gas source.
