00:00South Korean lawmakers on Thursday passed a bill that criminalizes possessing or watching

00:05sexually explicit deepfake images and videos, with penalties set to include prison terms

00:11and fines.

00:12I hereby declare that the amendment to the Special Court Act on the Punishment of Criminal

00:16Offences, Part 1, has been approved.

00:22There has been an outcry in South Korea over telegram group chats where sexually explicit

00:27and illegal deepfakes were created and widely shared, prompting calls for tougher punishment.

00:33Currently, making sexually explicit deepfakes with the intention of distributing them is

00:37punishable by five years in prison or a fine of 50 million won under the Sexual Violence

00:43Prevention and Victims Protection Act.

00:46Anyone purchasing, saving, or watching such material could face up to three years in jail

00:51or be fined up to 30 million won, according to the bill.

00:55When the new law takes effect, the maximum sentence for such crimes will also increase

01:00to seven years, regardless of the intention.

01:03The bill will now need the approval of President Yoon Suk-yol in order to be enacted.
