Now we review Beetlejuice Cash Grab Bember Berries.
00:05
I mean, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
00:09
Alright, ladies and gentlemen, I am Richard, this is my channel, and I have seen Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
00:17
Interesting fact for you, something I didn't know.
00:21
The title of the film is Beetlejuice as in, to make juice from beetles.
00:27
The name of the character is Beetlejuice as in Orion's hand.
00:32
The star in Orion.
00:36
Beetlejuice.
00:37
One is with a G and one is with a J.
00:43
For every thousand subscribers I get, I do purchase one of these bracelets from 4ocean.
00:48
4ocean pulls a pound of trash out of the ocean every time I do that.
00:52
If you'd be so kind as to comment, like, and subscribe, you'd be doing your part for a better world.
00:56
Now, 40 years ago, Lydia Dietz and her family moved into a home in the country that were inhabited by ghosts.
01:08
And those ghosts set upon them a poltergeist named Beetlejuice.
01:14
The ghosts sent Beetlejuice packing, but for all these 40 years, he has had a hard-on for Lydia Dietz.
01:22
And I can't blame him. Winona Ryder is hot.
01:26
I would very much like to spend some quality time with Winona Ryder, were she willing.
01:37
In this particular film, not only is Beetlejuice trying to get on Lydia after all these years,
01:44
but Lydia's father has been eaten by a shark or something, and they're all coming together for his funeral.
01:55
This culminates into very many moving parts that from this point forward would be spoilers.
02:04
But the point is, at this point, Lydia needs Beetlejuice to help her because her daughter's in trouble.
02:15
I don't want to go any further. I haven't seen the trailers, but I mean...
02:23
Well, look, you can tell 40 years have passed since the original film.
02:28
I did re-watch the original film to see this, and I have to say, you know...
02:37
This does not feel like a very solid follow-up to the original film.
02:41
There are a lot of things that appear to be there just to be there.
02:47
It's like the shrunken head characters. They don't look the same.
02:53
They, you know, look... Well, they're not the same.
02:57
There was one of them in the original.
03:00
At the end of the original film, Beetlejuice got his head shrunk.
03:05
Now there are these shrunken head characters, and you see more of Beetlejuice.
03:09
You see scenes from him being alive, and you learn more of his backstory, which is good.
03:15
The backstory of Beetlejuice is that he was a grave robber
03:21
during the time of the Black Death. I believe this was in Spain?
03:25
Or... I don't know.
03:28
And, you know, this woman falls in love with him in order to suck out his soul, because marriage.
03:35
And she poisons him. He chops her into a bunch of pieces.
03:40
And he turns into the afterlife entity known as Beetlejuice, being vengeful and angry.
03:46
It doesn't make any sense.
03:49
And his ex-wife, or his current wife, being till death do his part, so I guess ex-wife, is back.
03:57
The first scene, early part of the film, is her story.
04:02
And she's there to find Beetlejuice and suck the souls out of the ghosts and ghoulies that she can.
04:12
Which, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Her scenes are very simplistic.
04:16
It's the same scene over and over again.
04:20
It's like she's not even an intelligent character.
04:23
She's just a repetitious ghost, constantly saying, you know,
04:27
Where is Beetlejuice? Where is Beetlejuice?
04:29
And sucking out souls.
04:31
And it really feels like this character was put in there for the sake of,
04:36
we need something to pad the run time.
04:39
And it does give us a Danny DeVito cameo, which is cool. I like that.
04:43
I mean, appreciated Danny DeVito.
04:45
But his character wasn't given much to do, and he wasn't with us long.
04:49
And now you've really got to explain more about how dead people can die.
04:53
Because, I don't know if you're aware of this, but in the Bible,
04:57
soul refers to a living person.
05:00
Souls are mortal.
05:04
And spirits are immortal.
05:08
There is a difference, biblically speaking.
05:12
Now, of course, this doesn't say that there's a Christian paradigm,
05:15
but there are Christian imageries in this,
05:20
and marriage, at least in a Christian setting, is accepted.
05:24
So I'm really confused.
05:27
There are all these rules for the afterlife,
05:30
and the more you push these rules, the less they tend to work.
05:35
One of the aspects, one of the dynamics of the original film that I do have to question
05:40
is, you know, why is Beetlejuice essentially a subcontractor who you could hire to get rid of people?
05:49
What does he get out of the deal?
05:51
I mean, it's implied that he's hired by people to do this,
05:56
but it's never explained how he is paid or what his payment is.
06:02
In this particular iteration, he has an office with multiple employees,
06:08
so theoretically he's doing something,
06:11
but, you know, whatever currency populates the world of the dead
06:18
is completely, completely unaddressed.
06:25
It's a very strange, very strange movie.
06:28
And that's kind of the problem with Beetlejuice,
06:30
is that the more you talk about him, the more he comes undone.
06:35
Another point is he's referred to as a demon in the film,
06:38
but he's not a demon.
06:40
Demons were not, at one point, human.
06:42
He would be a poltergeist, right?
06:45
A troublesome spirit, a spirit that causes trouble,
06:48
damages things, and is generally unruly.
06:53
I would have to, of course, point out this is a comedy,
06:55
and it's just a movie, and nobody cares,
06:57
but that's kind of the thing,
07:01
is that when you're dealing with these comedies,
07:03
one of the greatest expressions ever told is,
07:06
comedy ain't no joke.
07:08
Unless you're calling him a demon for the laughs,
07:11
poltergeist would have probably made more sense.
07:14
So, yeah, look, I thought this movie was fine.
07:19
It's middle of the watch list.
07:21
It's not a great movie.
07:23
It's not the all-inclusive film that was Beetlejuice
07:26
that's incredibly dark, yet still solidly funny,
07:30
and, you know, an animated film with a huge energy to it.
07:34
This is like Beetlejuice, a little slowed down,
07:37
it's a little tired,
07:39
and, you know, they're kind of bringing this together.
07:44
This is the...
07:50
amusement park ride movie Beetlejuice.
07:53
Not the cool, interesting, fun Tim Burton film.
08:00
Now, look, I haven't been a fan of Tim Burton.
08:03
I have not watched a lot of his more recent films,
08:06
which is weird, because I'm a film critic,
08:08
and I understand that his visual style has changed a lot.
08:13
And, yeah, you see that in this film.
08:16
You don't see the same use of practicals.
08:18
You see larger sets.
08:20
You see more...
08:23
expanse.
08:24
And in this world, kind of less is more,
08:27
because the less you see, the more questions you have.
08:30
But they're not questions like,
08:32
wait, why does that happen like that?
08:34
They're questions like, I wonder what this world is like.
08:38
So, yeah.
08:39
Look, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice,
08:41
it is a middle-of-the-watch-list film.
08:43
You're probably going to see it at some point.
08:46
I mean, look.
08:48
It has more of a feel of a Generation 2 blockbuster
08:52
that is pre-Jurassic Park.
08:57
But it does not have the charm and love and energy
09:04
of a true Generation 2 blockbuster.
09:08
It's just...
09:09
It is a film. It is a solid film.
09:11
It is just not the great film that Beetlejuice was.
09:14
So it's got some big shoes to fill.
09:16
This doesn't mean it's a bad film.
09:18
It's probably one of the best things at the box office this weekend.
09:22
It's, you know...
09:25
It's high in the pack, but it's a slow pack.
09:29
Anyway, that's just my opinion.
09:30
I'd love to hear yours in the comments below.
09:32
I'm Richard.
09:33
Greetings, humans!
09:34
Your old pal Randall here again,
09:36
reminding you to comment, like, and subscribe.
09:39
You see, I got my bracelets from Ferocian,
09:41
and I got another!
09:43
Another medal from the Conqueror!
09:45
Yeah, yeah, look at that! See?
09:47
See? That's got an Easter Island head on it!
09:51
Because if you can't afford to go to Easter Island,
09:55
you can go and walk Easter Island virtually
09:59
by going to the Conqueror.
10:01
You could not screw up the environment
10:03
by traveling to Easter Island.
10:05
You could just get this, plant five trees,
10:08
and then walk on your own
10:10
and learn about Easter Island,
10:12
because they send you postcards.
10:14
And if you comment, like, and subscribe,
10:17
you can help the guy that owns this channel
10:19
buy things like this so he can plant trees,
10:22
and buy bracelets like this from Ferocian
10:25
so he can pull trash out of the ocean
10:27
and make a better world for you!
10:29
And it isn't gonna cost you anything!
10:31
So, so don't you have something to say?
10:34
I mean, shouldn't you in the comments down below
10:36
say how grateful you are
10:38
that this man has planted so many trees
10:41
and pulled so much trash out of the ocean?
10:43
Isn't that one of those good things for you?
10:45
No?
10:47
Ungrateful human!
10:49
I SHOULD EAT YOUR FACE!
