00:00An investigation into a now defunct fire agency, more than half a decade in the making.
00:08Operation Turton is a damning indictment into the culture of Victoria's fire services.
00:13The IBAC probe found three senior public servants of the old Metropolitan Fire Brigade
00:18leaked data to their union on at least five occasions,
00:22even hacking into MFB executive emails,
00:25all to further the cause of the United Firefighters Union and its boss Peter Marshall.
00:31My only interest is in relation to the matter we brought to the attention of the minister,
00:36and that is public safety.
00:38IBAC found in 2019 Mr Marshall asked MFB employees to seek out information for him
00:44about an investigation into him.
00:46This report is an absolute disgrace. We've referred it to our lawyers for action.
00:51This report was as a result of a complaint that was made in 2018.
00:56It was in relation to MFB. Obviously MFB no longer exists.
01:02The MFB was replaced by a new agency in 2020, Fire Rescue Victoria.
01:07The IBAC commissioner was not available for interview today, but in a pre-recorded video said
01:12At the time of publishing this report, the individuals involved are all employed by Fire Rescue Victoria.
01:18Clearly there are lessons in the report for Fire Rescue Victoria,
01:22and we fully accept and welcome the report and accept the recommendations contained within.
01:27IBAC made four recommendations aimed at addressing information security and corruption risks,
01:32as well as improving the culture within the current fire service.
01:35Some of the recommendations that are in the report we've already made significant progress on.
