Italy, Germany join carmakers in call to rethink internal combustion engine ban

Rome and Berlin are siding with the European automotive industry in calling for the EU to relax CO2 emissions standards for cars as the bloc aims to end the sale of new petrol and diesel models by 2035.

00:14For this reason, the Minister of Business, Adolfo Urso, will ask to bring forward the

00:18review clause of the regulation imposing the ban.

00:24The request comes in a complicated period for the European car market.

00:28In August, 18% fewer cars were registered compared to last year, with a significant

00:33decline in Germany and France.

00:58According to the Italian government, the review should postpone the entry into force of the

01:10ban and modify it by introducing exceptions for cars powered by biofuels or link it to

01:16greater investments that make it achievable.

01:59but wants to keep 2035 as the date for stopping sales.
