Rescuers combed the debris-strewn banks of a river in central Japan on Monday (Sept 23), searching for victims after homes were swept away in flooding and landslides that claimed at least six lives.

00:00Rescuers combed the debris-strewn banks of a river in central Japan on Monday,

00:09claiming at least six lives. The river on the Noto Peninsula,
00:13an area still recovering from a devastating earthquake in January,
00:17overflowed over the weekend, turning into a muddy torrent
00:21that flooded roads and a remote hamlet. As skies cleared,
00:25police, firefighters and residents, including the father of a missing 14-year-old girl,
00:30joined the search for seven people still unaccounted for.
00:34Japanese media, including NHK,
00:37reported six confirmed deaths. The region was hit by over 540 millimeters of rain
00:43in 72 hours,
00:44the heaviest recorded in Wajima since comparable data became available.
00:49The disaster struck as the area was slowly recovering from a magnitude 7.5
00:54earthquake on New Year's Day,
00:56which caused building collapses, tsunami waves
00:59and fires. By Monday afternoon, 3,700 households remained without power,
