00:00Yala National Park is the best reserve in Sri Lanka for seeing a wide variety of wildlife,
00:09and in particular, leopards, elephants, and sloth bears. There are approximately 215 bird
00:15species resident in the park, including seven endemics, along with 44 mammals. Udawalawe
00:22National Park has the largest population of Asian elephants of all of the national parks
00:27in Sri Lanka. With between 500 to 700 elephants living here, the chance of seeing some up
00:33close is guaranteed. Located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka, the Kumana National Park
00:41is a well-known ecotourism attraction and bird sanctuary where a multitude of birds
00:45breed and roost. Regular sightings include such species of bird as pelicans, painted
00:51storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets, and little cormorants. Horton Plains National
00:57Park is located at an elevation of 2,100 to 2,300 meters and encompasses montane grassland
01:04and cloud forest. It is rich in biodiversity, and many species found here are endemic to
01:10the region. Approximately 50 species of butterflies have been observed in the Wasgamuwa National
01:15Park, which are endemic to Sri Lanka. With so many rivers and streams intersecting Wasgamuwa,
01:22several species of fish can be seen, including the stone sucker and the comtail.
01:27Sinharaja Forest Reserve
01:30More than 60% of the trees are endemic, and many of them are considered rare. There is
01:35much endemic wildlife, especially birds, but the reserve is also home to over 50% of Sri
01:41Lanka's endemic species of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles,
01:46and rare amphibians.
01:48Benaria National Park is famous for its impressive gathering of wild elephants, and seeing hundreds
01:54of these magnificent animals converging around the waterholes during the dry season was absolutely
02:00breathtaking.
02:03Wilpattu National Park is a popular destination for spotting the majestic Sri Lankan leopard,
02:09which is an endemic subspecies. Being the largest cat and the top predator of the island,
02:16it can easily be seen during dawn and dusk, fearlessly prowling and basking by the velu
02:21and tank habitats.
