00:00Really good stuff. We'll get Kirk Morrison on in just a second as we go behind enemy lines.
00:04A former Raiders linebacker, by way of San Diego State, by way of Oakland, California.
00:08Bishop Odell, 5'2", a friend of the program. He'll join us in a second here.
00:12This is a big game, Shaski. This is a huge, huge, huge, huge game.
00:17I'm going to bring up the private show, the show within the show within the show at the break.
00:22What were you muttering? Are you willing to say it on air?
00:25What was I muttering?
00:26You've got some question marks on this team, on this offense, on this quarterback.
00:29No, I don't. Don't put me like that. No, no. I'm just saying.
00:32Right before we went to the break...
00:34Be careful. Be careful. Try to pay this guy $60 million a year.
00:38Be careful. Let's get 5-2-1. I'll explain after. I'll explain after. I'm just saying.
00:43What do you mean you're just saying? A week ago, just hear me out.
00:46A week ago, he was playing better football than Joe Burrow, which you said...
00:51He did over the last year. He did over the last year.
00:54These limitations seem to catch up with 49er quarterbacks. That's all.
00:58But one game and one interview and now...
01:01No, it's not just one interview, man. No, it's not just one interview.
01:05I felt like this for a while. $60 million is a lot of money, which is why I don't want to talk about it.
01:09We're talking about resetting the quarterback market. That's fine. We can do that.
01:13But no one's saying he's making $60 million for 12 years in a row.
01:16Like, I don't know. We'll see.
01:205-2. We got 5-2.
01:22I'm here.
01:23Let's go. He's ready to roll. He's in Louisville, Kentucky.
01:26I'm just listening. I'm just listening.
01:29Hey, man. Hey, we just had Kirk.
01:31By the way, Kirk Morrison, by way of the River Islands Guest Line.
01:34All guests on the 95-70 game appear on the River Islands Guest Line.
01:37This is the time for you to discover the islands. River Islands and Latham Sea.
01:40I'm in a foxhole up here, Kirk, because we're petrified to criticize Brock Purdy on anything.
01:47Like, we come out of the Minnesota game. We were having a conversation last hour.
01:50Brock Purdy, when it comes to losses, we go to Shed-A-Head, we go to the receivers, we go to the defense.
01:56It's never Purdy's fault. It's never. And I don't like to play the blame game at all.
02:00But Purdy, we just had Patrick Peterson on him. He's breaking down the film.
02:03And maybe you did, too, where everything is predicated in the middle of the field to pass the game.
02:07I'm sure you heard the Jay Gruden comments about the Shed-A-Head passing game where he's like,
02:11you know, I love that my first and second down, but on third down,
02:14I'm not looking at Shed-A-Head's passing game getting blown away by it.
02:17Actually, I'm not impressed by it. What do you see in the Shed-A-Head passing game?
02:21Are you impressed by it? Are you kind of sitting back saying, boy,
02:24if you could just take away the middle of the field, you got them in the pass game.
02:28One hundred percent. I mean, but you got to think, again, it's winning first and second down.
02:32That's how the 49ers have won. They've won first and second down.
02:36And they get into some manageable third down where you can play the entire field.
02:40When you get into third and long, it's a little bit different.
02:43You're forcing your quarterback to have to find the open guy.
02:46Can he go through the progressions? Will he have enough time to go through those progressions?
02:50And so, yeah, obviously the middle of the field is where George Kittle has feasted for many years.
02:56And in this offense, a little bit different when you don't have that opportunity,
03:00when you have those third and long. I think it kind of goes back to what I call,
03:05and I've been telling people now, there's a fear of Cinderella.
03:09Cinderella, one of the great movies of all time, but there is a fear of Cinderella,
03:14meaning that Brock Purdy, at some point, we feel like the carriage is going to turn into a pumpkin.
03:19We're just kind of sitting back and waiting because we see these games where you want your quarterback
03:24to take over and put it on his shoulders. And yet, a game like Minnesota,
03:28if someone asked me who had never seen football last week, think about this, fellas, right, Joe?
03:34If you had never watched football last week and you turned on the tape and watched the Vikings
03:40and the 49ers, the better quarterback was Sam Darnall, right?
03:44You would say the quarterback in purple was the better quarterback.
03:48And that's what people keep going back to. It should never be that way.
03:52When you guys talk about $60 million a year, it's, OK, I want to see that.
03:56And look, it's not just Brock Purdy. I talk about all the quarterbacks like this.
04:00But right now, he is the topic of discussion because we are in a time,
04:04and I don't care what people write or whatever out there in the Bay Area because I read it all.
04:08This next, this string of games without Debo, without Christian McCaffrey,
04:13without some of the guys, this is all on Brock Purdy.
04:16This is the biggest year of Brock Purdy's career. We know that.
04:19But this is, the 49ers will win on Sunday if number 13 in red has the game that we expect.
04:26This can't be on a defense. I want to see Brock Purdy take over,
04:30and I haven't seen that enough.
04:32Well, that's a fair point. I think most people, reasonable people,
04:37think he's really good. How good is the question mark, right?
04:40Like, you know what I mean? I don't think he's a bum,
04:42and I definitely don't think he's the best quarterback in the league.
04:45But I think on any given day, there's a variety of quarterbacks.
04:48I'd throw Dak into this same kind of boat. On any given day,
04:51Dak can have a monster game and will you to a victory,
04:55and he can also throw a couple up and lose you one as he's done in the playoffs
04:59over and over again. But I think, like, for example,
05:01and I'm just using Dak because he makes a lot of money,
05:03I think he's a really good player, and you can win 10, 11, 12 games with him
05:07pretty much yearly if he stays upright.
05:09I just think there's a lot more quarterbacks in the Brock, Goff, Tua, Dak category
05:16than there are Mahomes, Josh Allen, right?
05:19And I just think that we're viewing everything through the Mahomes prism.
05:22I'd throw Stafford in there. Like, Stafford on his great days
05:25can will his team to win, but he also throws a lot up, man,
05:28and he gets banged up a lot because he holds on to that ball.
05:31I mean, I'm not saying he's not a really good player.
05:33The guy's probably a Hall of Famer, but I don't know.
05:36I think we could say that about seven or eight quarterbacks in the league right now,
05:39and I'd rather be one of those than be one of the ones searching for one.
05:43Points are valid there. I totally agree with some of those points,
05:47but I think that at the end of the day, we've also seen a larger sample size, right?
05:52Especially with Matthew Stafford. He's a larger sample size.
05:55I think Dak Prescott, same thing. Larger sample size.
05:59But when it comes to Brock Purdy, we're still thinking about it.
06:02And then you still got Breyer's remorse. I mean, I really feel like,
06:05you know, Brandon, you walked in there, robbed the 49ers with no mask on,
06:09and now you're stuck with a contract of like, man, is this going to be the player or not?
06:14I think that's also something that's in the back of the mind of a lot of people as well.
06:18Okay, you've got the weapons now. It's not like Brock Purdy doesn't have the weapons.
06:22He's got them. Can he make this team go? And that's all it is.
06:26Week in and week out, you got one of the best defenses in the league.
06:30I think we want to see more statistically. We want to see more where the 49ers won
06:36because of Brock Purdy, not despite Brock Purdy, if that makes sense.
06:40I get that. I want to bring up the IU thing because that's fascinating.
06:44Similar, I think he's really good. I don't know if he's one of the top four or five
06:49wide receivers, and I think that he's benefited from a lot of things
06:52that the Niners have on offense. CMC, the spacing, Debo, Kittle,
06:57quarterback's accuracy, play action. But I also think he's really good,
07:01and I don't want to diminish how good he is. But I argued with Bonte.
07:05It's like, I don't know if it's a sound business strategy
07:08unless you're going to adapt how you play football to invest $60 million
07:13in two wide receivers when you're hell-bent on getting to 35 rushes
07:17every single game. I think that that's a team-building question
07:21more than it is an IU question. You say he robbed the Niners.
07:24Why do you say that?
07:26I say that because I didn't know he turned into Jerry Rice.
07:29All summer long, it was like, Brandon, IU this, Brandon, IU that.
07:32And I felt like, look, yes, it was a boom in wide receiver contracts.
07:36We see that. But when I look around at Justin Jefferson,
07:39obviously it's a difference when Justin Jefferson's on the field.
07:42Niko Collins, we saw it the other day with the Houston Texans.
07:45There are guys that when they're on the field, you know.
07:49A lot of times we got on this way, is IU going to field today?
07:53Or this series? Sometimes you don't know.
07:56Because here comes Jawan Jennings making a play.
07:58Here comes some other people. And you're like, oh, okay, there goes IU
08:01on an 11-yard comeback or something like that.
08:05You know what I mean? I call a spade a spade, man.
08:09I'm a guy who watches the entire football game.
08:12And I really believe that for IU, he has to play much bigger than where he's at.
08:17And I get it. We can have the excuse of he's done no training camp.
08:22He's still getting in shape and all that stuff.
08:24But this is what the NFL is. You come in, you got to play and be ready to roll.
08:28Is that a product of Shedahan's offensive system?
08:31The passing game where he doesn't necessarily...
08:33It seems like they game plan for D-Ball a little more than IU.
08:36What would IU look like?
08:38Say if he's on the L.A. Rams playing with Matthew Stafford,
08:40would he produce a 1,300-yard season?
08:42How would McVay use him? Can he be that guy?
08:45Oh, he would cook. Because McVay is going to scheme you up.
08:49He's going to find ways to get you to football regardless.
08:52And that's why it's going to be fun this weekend.
08:54Because there is no Puka Nakua. There is no Cooper Cup.
08:57And yet you're going to have receivers like a Tyler Johnson.
09:00Demarcus Robinson, right?
09:02Are now your number one guys going into this week.
09:05And then Jordan Whittington, who's a rookie.
09:07So they'll find ways to scheme those guys up.
09:10And I want to see how does Matthew Stafford get it going.
09:13Because I think if IU was in this offense,
09:15they would find ways to just get him to football more and more.
09:19But what scares me the most about the Niners is when D-Ball Samuel is on the field.
09:23And I told people, look at the receiver on Netflix.
09:26I mean, it showed you.
09:28If you watch that documentary on Netflix for people out there listening,
09:31just watch it. The 49ers, I won't say the offense was in shambles,
09:35but it's a different offense without D-Ball Samuel in the lineup.
09:40So now you possibly may not have George Kittle as well.
09:43And this is, remember, with Christian McCaffrey.
09:45Now this offense doesn't have Christian McCaffrey.
09:47This is a scary season right now for the 49ers in the early parts.
09:52I'm not going to say, hey, this maker breaks their season.
09:55But what I'm saying is that they may have to just tread water
09:59just to get in the tournament.
10:01And if the 49ers make the playoffs, there's no, to me, look,
10:04they're still a Super Bowl type of team.
10:06But this domination of being the number one seed and winning a division
10:10and all that, I don't know if that's what I want for the 49ers.
10:14I feel like they need to play more with a chip on their shoulder.
10:16Because last year, the expectations, if you don't want to be real,
10:19the expectations of, and look, George Kittle said it even in the receiver.
10:24Like, this is our best team.
10:26We should win.
10:27I feel like the 49ers are a better team when they're underdogs than favorites.
10:31Kirk Morrison here on the River Islands Guest Line.
10:33Do you think this offense would have been able to function
10:36without Brendan Ayoub?
10:37What are you saying about number 11?
10:39Because we went back and forth all training camp, and Kirk,
10:41we talked about Brendan Ayoub.
10:42You hit me with the same line.
10:43Like, where'd he turn into Terry Rice?
10:45So what if they did trade him to Pittsburgh?
10:47What if they did trade him to Pittsburgh and didn't have Brendan Ayoub?
10:49Now, I'll be scary this week because no Deebo, no McCaffrey,
10:52no Kittle, and all of a sudden, no Ayoub.
10:53Like, damn, who they're going to throw the ball to?
10:55But would this offense still be able to function at a high level
10:58if they didn't have number 11 at the wide receiver spot?
11:02Yeah.
11:03John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan told you that
11:06by drafting a receiver in the first round.
11:08I mean, that ain't rocket science.
11:10You don't draft a receiver in the first round
11:12because, oh, we want to develop him.
11:14No, that's why you draft Danny Gray, right?
11:16And you hope that they develop into a spot.
11:19You draft a receiver in the first round, you're saying,
11:21hey, we're going to replace the guy that's there.
11:23We've already moved on.
11:25Now, look, this is how the perfect storm had worked out.
11:28Ricky Pearsall, obviously, you know, we know what happened in San Francisco
11:31I won't talk about, but just his injury history
11:33has not allowed him to be on the field before then.
11:36And so now it kind of opened the door for an Ayoub opportunity.
11:40But I think the 49ers already told you,
11:43when you draft a receiver in the first round,
11:45you're not drafting him to develop, you're drafting him to play right away.
11:48So, obviously, they had already said,
11:50we can insert anyone into this offense,
11:53especially at the wide receiver position.
11:55All right, Kirk, I love you.
11:57You know I do. I love going back and forth.
11:59Always. Always.
12:00I mean, and I get we're picking apart things,
12:03but if I'm driving around the Bay Area right now,
12:06I'm listening to you talk.
12:07The Niners won 13 games, okay, six in 2020,
12:1010 games, 13 games, 12 games last year.
12:13They've won eight playoff games.
12:16Eight playoff games in a five-year span.
12:18They've been wildly successful.
12:20I just, I'm listening to this rhetoric,
12:23and I get what you're saying.
12:24Like, we're talking about winning the ultimate one,
12:26and that's where we start to really critique it.
12:28But, like, we act like they've not been spectacular.
12:31They've been spectacular.
12:32In fact, they've been dominant.
12:34This is the price you pay for being a really good team.
12:37I know, but the way we're talking about them,
12:39and I'm listening, and I get why we're doing this.
12:41We're picking apart certain things, and I get that.
12:43I believe me.
12:44I understand that.
12:45But, like, and they have flaws.
12:47Like, the dropback passing game is not perfect,
12:50but what they've done has been wildly successful.
12:53So, when I listen to all, and not just yourself,
12:55but just other people complain, and this, and that,
12:57and, like, I'm frustrated.
12:58I want to win it.
12:59I'm sad as hell we didn't win it last year.
13:01But, like, it's hard to knock them.
13:04They've been so freaking good.
13:07I mean, Shesty, is that what the Kyle Shanahan's,
13:11when his, at some point, how long he coaches
13:13for the 49ers, it's going to be the,
13:16we almost got it done.
13:18Is that not what the mantra's going to be?
13:20I know, I know, I know.
13:22That part kills me.
13:23Hey, you can say that same thing
13:24about the Baltimore Ravens, too, right?
13:26Yeah.
13:27I mean, they've been solid.
13:28They've been great, but at the end,
13:29I mean, they got a two-time MVP on their team.
13:32They're in a similar situation as the 49ers.
13:34But, I would say that we've actually won
13:36high-level playoff games.
13:38They finally won one this year.
13:39Like, I just feel a little different.
13:41The Niners won eight playoff games.
13:42Like, they lost because Mahomes in overtime.
13:46It's not like they got smoked off the field
13:48in the NFC Championship game.
13:49But it's self-inflicted wounds, though,
13:50when they lost those games.
13:51You keep saying, well, Smalls, Mahomes, Mahomes.
13:53Watch how those games played out.
13:55The Niners crapped the bed
13:56on those biggest stages.
13:57You don't, they don't, they pick up Patrick Mahomes
14:00and they don't score?
14:01I just need to mark myself in.
14:03Like, just come on, man.
14:04I mean, I don't even want to talk about
14:06how overtime started, right?
14:08We didn't even know the rules.
14:09We didn't even know the rules.
14:11Come on, Joe.
14:12Come on, Chas.
14:13You talking to the guy that was screaming
14:15in the media area,
14:17you gotta score seven here.
14:18Like, you cannot give him the ball back.
14:20I was screaming it.
14:21Do not kick a field goal.
14:23This is four down territory.
14:24So, trust me, I'm well aware.
14:25What are we doing?
14:26I'm just saying, what are we doing?
14:29How's this game going to play out on Sunday, man?
14:31Because this is the walking wounded.
14:32We don't even know if George Kittle's going to play.
14:34He's got hands really tight in his.
14:35Right, right.
14:36He boasts he sat out practice yesterday
14:38with a rib injury.
14:39Tarveria Swart was saying that,
14:40hey, they were just being cautious with him,
14:42but I'm sure McVay and company are saying,
14:43oh, well, let's test him.
14:44Let's see how sore he is on the outside there.
14:47How's this game going to play out, man?
14:49We know it's going to be a bunch of Niner fans,
14:51and Niners have had the Rams' number
14:52in the regular season,
14:53but the Rams have not won.
14:54Not won in an NCAA championship game.
14:56How's this going to play out on Sunday, man?
14:58Because nobody's talking about the Rams
14:59or giving them a shot.
15:00Yeah, and I love that position for them.
15:03Again, I think this game comes down
15:05to number 13 in red and number nine
15:07in the white jersey this weekend.
15:08That's what it comes down to.
15:10This is a quarterback game.
15:11This is when, this is what I always say.
15:14When the seas are rocky,
15:17do you have a captain that can help you
15:19keep calm, can bring the ships home,
15:22and not be the Titanic?
15:23That's what you pay Matthew Stafford for,
15:26and that's what the 49ers are going to
15:28eventually pay Brock Purdy for.
15:30It's these types of moments.
15:31It's these types of games.
15:33Because everyone's going to tell you
15:34how you can't win,
15:35but these quarterbacks can keep you
15:37in the game and help you win.
15:39So at the end of the day,
15:40when y'all texting me on Sunday night
15:43after the game is over,
15:45let's just look at the box score.
15:47That's what's going to tell you.
15:48We're going to see whether it's Brock Purdy's day
15:50or Matthew Stafford's day.
15:51There's going to be some unbelievable plays.
15:53Look, Fred Warner is like
15:55watching Picasso right now, dude.
15:57I watch the defensive film,
15:59and I swear I just sit back
16:00and I just have a smile on my face
16:02watching 54 run around
16:04on the field for the 49ers.
16:06He may be my X factor
16:08if the 49ers win this game,
16:10because he's literally dominating the games.
16:12And you can tell in his press conference,
16:14we're doing all that we can.
16:16We got to win, you know what I mean?
16:17But look, I would say this.
16:20We're only a couple weeks into the season.
16:22There's no reason to overreact, panic.
16:24The first four weeks of the season,
16:25I always say, are truly a preseason game.
16:29All these dudes had fitted caps on the sideline,
16:33tennis shoes during preseason.
16:35It takes two to three weeks,
16:37maybe even a month,
16:38before we really find out
16:40who these teams really are.
16:41But this is a big game
16:43because it's a measuring stick on both sides.
16:45No, Kirk, it's your season on the line.
16:47Let's just call it what it is.
16:48You got a million guys on IR.
16:50Let's keep the same energy.
16:51If you guys go 0-3, your season's over.
16:53Over!
16:55Well, they went 3-6 last year.
16:57And then I went to the bye week
16:58and then ran a table in 7-1.
17:00So I don't know how much over it can be.
17:02Ran a table last year in the playoffs.
17:04And I'll say this too, Kirk.
17:05Everybody but me around here said,
17:07oh man, you want to avoid the residency playoffs?
17:09Oh, you better watch out for the Rams.
17:11So the energy was very different.
17:12You're right about that.
17:13Hey, Kirk, man.
17:14Oh, come on, man.
17:15It's all fun.
17:16Kirk, I'm not going to let you get away with that.
17:17You know that.
17:18I got to stand my ground.
17:20This is stand my ground city.
17:21Trust me, man.
17:22Like, look, everybody over here in Los Angeles
17:25is talking about Shohei Ohtani, right?
17:26I hate him.
17:27He's still in my head.
17:28I know.
17:29He should have been a giant.
17:30I get it.
17:31But, you know, that's what we got to hear
17:33down in Los Angeles, right?
17:35So, look, I'm just looking forward to a big game.
17:37Obviously, 49er faithful are going to be out loud and proud.
17:40It's going to be a fun matchup.
17:42You know, I think that we'll know more about each team
17:45after this weekend and what we think about the quarterbacks.
17:48And then, obviously, what may have to happen
17:50when the trade deadline comes up.
17:52Because, man, that thing is coming fast and quick.
17:54Yeah.
17:55Ooh, there's going to be some movement there.
17:56Real quick, Arizona.
17:57You watch the film at Arizona.
17:59All training camp, I was like, man,
18:00something's cooking down there at Glendale, man.
18:02I think they got a good program rolling on.
18:04Are there a team we're going to need to be watching here
18:06down the stretch, Arizona?
18:09Man, so when I do my training camp tour,
18:11sat down with, you know, Kyler and Coach Jonathan Gay
18:14and Drew Petchik, they just quietly going about their business.
18:18Like, they just, you know what I mean?
18:20Like, they like the role that they're in.
18:22It was something about how they finished last season
18:24that that's all they kept talking about.
18:26Like, when Kyler Murray got back and the confidence
18:29that the coaching staff and the team had in him,
18:32he is healthy, they got a running game,
18:35they got one of the best young receivers in the game,
18:37Marvin Harrison Jr., and they got a defense
18:40where Buda Baker is balling, y'all.
18:42Oh, he balling.
18:43Like, this is a scary football team.
18:45You saw it in week one and what they did to the Bills.
18:48They should have won that game.
18:49They lost, but they should have won that game.
18:51But, man, last week, dude, that dude, Kyler Murray,
18:54he put on the clinic y'all last week,
18:56and he was like, I wasn't even trying to run.
18:58I'm just trying to just make plays.
19:00That dude still has the speed.
19:02He still got the arm, and he got some weapons to work with.
19:04Now, tight ends and wide receivers,
19:06and an offensive line that they've invested in
19:08in the draft.
19:10So, they're one of those teams, like, kind of watch out.
19:12Only thing is, I want to see, can they still create a pass rush, right?
19:15That pass rush, you know, they don't have a lot of guys.
19:18They lost Ojelary right before the season.
19:20But, if they can develop a pass rush,
19:23and we know how it is when Cardinals Niners link up,
19:25it's always that one game, you're like, uh-oh, here come the Cardinals.
19:28That may be their season.
19:30You know, what ends up happening in November
19:32when the new Call of Duty gets released,
19:34that's going to be the true test for Kyler.
19:36But, also, also, you know, Kirk, I respect it.
19:40You sold hard today.
19:42Them Wolf tickets, you're selling on the Rams, bro,
19:45because your season is cooked if you lose to us on Sunday.
19:490-3, and you're going to trade Stafford.
19:51Let's go. I hear you. I can hear it in the back of your voice.
19:54We'll see what happens in the trade deadline,
19:56i.e., maybe we move Stafford.
19:59Sassy, on Monday, don't be talking about,
20:01let's talk about Warriors training camp upcoming after this game.
20:04Let's see how many buckets is available.
20:07We'll be begging for a trip to Hawaii for training camp, that's for sure.
20:10You already talking about Warriors training camp on Monday
20:14I'm actually going to be talking about Giants GM search.
20:16Yeah, no, he's in baseball.
20:18He's still taking Giants.
20:20Giants fans are now being under delusion.
20:22Well, if we offer Soto $600 million.
20:24Just stop. Just stop.
20:28Hey, them the Wolf tickets that we need to talk about.
20:30They're throwing out all this fake money
20:32to all these players who ain't coming.
20:35Hey, go visit the original KFC out there while you're in Louisville.
20:38Will you do it? Let me know how it is.
20:40Hey, I am. I got off the airplane last night, walked over.
20:44I'm like, oh, Colonel Sanders.
20:46They really got like the Colonel Sanders statue up.
20:49I'm like, it's real out here in Louisville.
20:51You ever see the South Park where Cartman is?
20:54It's like Scarface. It's all time good about KFC.
20:58It's the best.
20:595-2, man. You're the best, Kirk.
21:00I always love talking to you, man. Have fun.
21:02Have a good call tomorrow. Georgia Tech in Louisville.
21:04Then we'll see you Sunday when you're back in L.A. for Rams and Niners.
21:07All right. Sounds good, fellas. Anytime, man.
21:09I'll be good. Have a good weekend.
21:10You too, Kirk. You too, man.
21:11Kirk Morrison, eight-year NFL vet.
21:13Former Raider, Bishop on down, ESPN broadcaster.
21:16Rams-NFL, pre and post-game show.
21:18Let me just tell you right now.
21:20This is a must-win for Shanahan, a must-win for Purdy,
21:25a must-win for Aiyuk, and a must-win for 49er fans
21:29because if they lose this game, Monday is going to be chaotic.
21:33It is going to be all-time chaotic.
21:36My pet's heads are falling off, the sirens and everything.
21:40They lose this game on Sunday. I'm telling you, man.
