The art of glass: Venice celebrates its iconic history of glass making in week-long festival

To celebrate its history of glassmaking, Venice and the nearby island of Murano are dedicating a week of events, exhibitions and workshops to the craft.

00:00I think that Venice and glass get along very well, in my opinion.

00:29It is part of our heritage, of our history, of our culture.

00:34If you allow me, it is part of the luxury of Venice.

00:36Venice has lived in luxury for centuries.

00:39So, if I can, I am also proud to have taken this road, this path.

00:59There are many reasons, I think, why Venice is known for its glass.

01:12Obviously, a thousand-year history is completely extraordinary.

01:16But the concentration of talent and skill and knowledge, know-how, on one island is

01:20completely remarkable.

01:22In many cases, these skills and traditions have been handed down over the years, over

01:26the generations, from father to son, father to daughter, daughter to son, and so on.

01:32And in fact, we are seeing more and more women operating in the field of glass, although

01:36of course women have always been active in different roles in the glass world, but perhaps

01:40more and more we see more and more women glassmakers and designers too.
