00:00According to a study, 4.5 million Filipinos have polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS.
00:08This is a condition that affects the reproductive health of a woman.
00:14Today is PCOS Awareness Month.
00:16We will be joined by PCOS warrior, Rina Maglalang, to share her PCOS journey
00:23and how lifestyle can help in handling PCOS.
00:27Good morning, Ma'am Rina.
00:30Hi, good morning.
00:33Hi, Rina. Rise and shine. This is Prof. Fie, together with Audrey.
00:37You have been fighting PCOS for 11 years now.
00:40But how did you know that you have PCOS?
00:46First of all, I was still in high school when I had a problem during my menstruation period.
00:54So that became a warning to me.
00:56And then until such time, when I got married, I said that something is not right with my health.
01:04So when I found out that I have the symptoms, I immediately consulted a doctor.
01:11And then the doctor recommended medicines to regulate my menstruation.
01:17Okay, PCOS is said to be very difficult to feel.
01:22It has an effect on your mental health and physical health, right?
01:25So in your journey, in your personal experience, how did it affect you?
01:32First of all, I am always moody.
01:35Because there are times when even I can't understand my emotions.
01:44Like this morning, I am okay.
01:46And then in the afternoon, it's different.
01:48At night, my feelings and emotions are different.
01:52So it's really hard to deal with.
01:54Especially when your mood swings are weak.
02:01Because there are people around you that you really have to control your emotions.
02:06So it's a challenge for us to fight this kind of health issue.
02:12Because sometimes, there are people that you can't understand because of your mood swings.
02:19Not all people can understand that.
02:22Especially if they don't have that kind of feeling.
02:27Later on, you will fight.
02:34Because your emotions are like that.
02:36Your head is always hot.
02:38And it affects our mental health.
02:40Because for us, we can't understand why we feel that way.
02:45So it's really challenging mentally.
02:48Alright, we understand that there is no cure for PCOS.
02:51But how do you think a healthy and active lifestyle can help manage PCOS symptoms?
03:03If a woman has PCOS, one of the symptoms is obesity.
03:10So in order for us to avoid obesity, we need to have an active lifestyle.
03:18So that we can reduce our stored fats, lower our uric acid, and lower our sugar.
03:26Because when I started being active, I noticed that my sugar levels went down.
03:35My uric acid went down.
03:39So it really affects me when I have regular physical activities.
03:47Okay, ma'am.
03:48One of the exercises that you recommend is running.
03:52How can we practice this effectively?
03:56Do you also join running events?
04:00Yes, I join fun runs.
04:03I also have a club that I joined.
04:07We have weekly activities.
04:11It's also beginner-friendly if you haven't run before.
04:18The activities in our club could lead to an invitation to join fun runs.
04:26The community will help you to reach your milestone
04:32if you want to join 5km or 10km fun runs.
04:40The community will help you to boost your emotion to be physically active.
04:49The fun runs will also help you to be proud of yourself
04:55because you know that you can run a certain distance.
04:59You thought you can't, but you can.
05:02Rina, share with us if you have other exercises that could help manage your symptoms.
05:12One of my exercises, aside from running, is walking.
05:17Because there are times when I can't go to community runs.
05:23Sometimes, when I have time before work, I do a solo run.
05:28When I don't have time, I really keep moving.
05:33I walk. Instead of riding a tricycle, I walk.
05:38It's important because you don't need to spend money.
05:43You just need to walk and run a certain distance.
05:47Aside from that, I also do exercises like strengthening and conditioning.
05:54It's very effective for people with PCOS because you sweat more.
06:00It helps to fight obesity.
06:03That's why I encourage other people to do that kind of activity.
06:09Okay, ma'am.
06:10Lastly, what are your messages to your female colleagues who are experiencing PCOS?
06:17You mentioned earlier that there is no cure for this.
06:21For people like me, engage with the community.
06:27Especially if you want to be physically active.
06:31Like me, I joined a run club.
06:33I also joined an exclusive community of women.
06:38Because when you're in a community, you become more open about your emotions.
06:45You get to know people who are in the same situation as you.
06:51You will be able to fight the symptoms.
06:58Especially now, this condition is not directly curable.
07:03That's why having a physically active lifestyle and joining a community
07:10that you think will help you become more physically active is better.
07:17We also need a healthy lifestyle.
07:21We need to maintain what we eat.
07:23We need to reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks.
07:29We need to be healthy and physically active in order to fight this condition.
07:37Walking, running, healthy lifestyle, and engaging with other communities
07:42are important for us to be able to manage PCOS.
07:47On that note, thank you very much, Rina, for sharing your experience
07:52and giving us tips on how to fight PCOS.
07:55Thank you very much, Ms. Rina.
