00:00Welcome to churned in culture where we explore the intersection of food culture and social justice with our friends at Ben and Jerry's
00:09I'm police Marie also known as police Marie and I'm joined today by Olympia offset
00:14She's a community leader and founder of supermarket a low-cost organic grocery that's dedicated to ending food apartheid. Thank you so much for being here
00:21Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for inviting me. So excited to get started. Tell us what we're making today today
00:26We're creating a layered shake experience using these Ben and Jerry's flavors. We have fish food and milk and cookies
00:33They come in the dairy ice creams as well. First step. Let's do the sauce
00:37We want our pot on medium medium low we have cashew milk, which is already so rich and creamy
00:43I love it. And then we're using maple syrup as our natural sweetener
00:48And then of course we need the cocoa powder. I'm gonna whisk it. Do you like chocolate? Oh, I love chocolate
00:55I try to make sure that it's fair trade and have so many great benefits for you
00:58What inspired you to start supermarket growing up having to leave my neighborhood every time I wanted quality fresh ingredients like the ones we're using now
01:06It was something we always had to do and it was kind of normalized that you have to leave your neighborhood to get things
01:11And when you're in South Central, there's 1.3 million people living there, but there's only 60 grocery store
01:16That's insane. That's just making food accessible and cream those options. That's really cool
01:21All right, so this came together or thick and I was so silly. All right, let's get into the coconut flakes
01:28I love coconut because it smells so aromatic and that nuttiness is just going to come out even more when we toast it
01:34While you toast those I'll show everyone the crumble the two major ingredients are walnuts and maple syrup
01:40I mean you just add whatever dessert seasonings you like throw everything in the food processor and then press press and then you're done
01:45This is smell it. Can you smell it?
01:47Let's get ready to make these shakes
01:50For you
01:52Milk and cookies for me fish food. We are adding the Ben and Jerry's directly to our blender
01:59Puree it up and get it nice and smooth
02:04We're gonna layer the Ben and Jerry's with the fudge all the way to the top and then leave some room for whipped coconut cream
02:11We're gonna walnut crumble
02:13These look so good. So good. It's like the best milkshake I've ever made
02:19Oh my god, like not even kidding. This is so good with supermarket. You're not just selling folks groceries
02:24You are creating opportunities for education and so much more food is just one piece of the equation
02:30So you need to have it there. It needs to be affordable. It needs to be nearby
02:33This earth belongs to all of us. We all live on it and we all deserve to eat from it and to enjoy it
02:39Thank you for taking the time to explain everything and share your story. I'm just glad that Ben and Jerry's decided to feed me today
02:49You
