Former detective Gary Jubelin urges William Tyrrell investigators to keep an open mind

Ten years ago, three-year-old William Tyrrell vanished while playing at his grandmother’s house in Kendall on the New South Wales mid-north coast. Mystery still surrounds his disappearance, with the lack of closure haunting many.

00:00I'm standing at the Kendal Showground, which is where the search headquarters were set

00:06up 10 years ago when William Turrell went missing.

00:10At the time, there was a real sense of hope and urgency as locals in this close-knit village

00:16also joined with police and emergency service crews in looking for a little boy.

00:21There was a feeling that if everybody chipped in, then this little child who'd wandered

00:26off would be quickly found.

00:28But as the hours and then the days ticked over and there were no clues at all as to

00:33William's whereabouts, that initial hope turned to a feeling of desperation and shock.

00:40And then, of course, the police investigation turned to looking into other avenues as to

00:44what had happened to William Turrell.

00:47At the time, my own son was also three years old, the same age as William, and I would

00:52go home at night and just give him a big hug and look at him and wonder what had happened

00:58to another little boy of the same age.

01:00And that's a feeling which plagued many parents here in Kendal.

01:04I spoke to another woman here, Ellen Bott, who also had a child of the same age at the

01:09time and took part in that initial search, and she said she still feels emotional today

01:14thinking about it and wondering, you know, what happened to William Turrell.

01:19Many here in the community would love some closure in this case.

01:23The coronial inquest into William's disappearance is resuming later this year and there is still

01:30a hope that there will one day be some answers and some closure.

01:34The village here certainly does feel like it's regrouped.

01:37It's busy and bustling in the town and it's a close-knit town, but of course everybody

01:42would love some answers.
