Allotment holders in Dover are concerned about the 'unreliable' water supply from a solar-powered borehole well

00:00The difficulty we've had is that the system as it is, as it stands now, doesn't deliver the water

00:06at the critical time when gardeners need it. As a result I've lost all my crops this year

00:14because at that critical time I just could not get access to water. You see it works with

00:20solar power so if there's no sun we're not getting anything pumped up. There's a limited capacity

00:27in the tank. If people use it at various times of the day and you have to come in an evening to

00:34attend your allotment there's no water left in the tank. I don't think anybody in principle is

00:39against the use of the groundwater. It's about the delivery when you need it. I grow food for

00:46food bank Dover Pantry, the Sunrise Cat and I'm probably down about 50 percent of my,

00:54the quantity that I normally, the amount I harvest. These people do an important

01:00amount of work growing local food for local people. They're dedicated, they work hard

01:06and we should be supporting them and encouraging them and helping them

01:11and I see this, my concern is this dogma about self-sufficiency. We need common sense.
