00:11A spokesman from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where Cheptegi was also
00:15treated and later died, announced that her ex-boyfriend, Dixon Ndima Marangach, passed
00:21away at 7.50pm local time on Monday.
00:2533-year-old Cheptegi, who competed in the marathon at the Paris Olympics, suffered burns
00:30to more than 75% of her body during the September 1st attack and died four days later.
00:37She finished 44th in the Paris Marathon and is now the third elite female athlete to be
00:42killed in Kenya since October 2021.
00:46Cheptegi's death has put the spotlight on domestic violence in the East African country,
00:51particularly within its running community.
00:54Violence groups warn that female athletes in the country face high risks of exploitation
00:59and violence, often from men attracted to their prize money, which significantly exceeds
01:05local incomes.
