00:00The knee meniscus. What do we mean by the knee meniscus? Well it's this here. So here we have the femur and the tibia making up the hinge joint of the knee.
00:09Now the articular surfaces are curved which is great. It allows the knee to move in the way that the knee moves.
00:17But because of this curved shape we have a meniscus. This is a fibrocartilage forming kind of like a ring or a C shape.
00:24If I pull it back you can see the actual shape which helps support these curves.
00:29Meaning the loads transferred between the femur and the tibia are more even across the articular cartilage here.
00:36Now with traumatic injuries, maybe as a result of sport or skiing injuries, this fibrocartilage of the meniscus might be torn.
00:44Leading to problems because now the biomechanics of the knee are disrupted giving pain and swelling and what have you.
00:50Worse, if this is disrupted then we might get higher loads on the articular cartilage leading to osteoarthritis later in life.
