Chinese netizens mourn Douyin influencer ‘Uncle Ganba’

Chinese netizens are mourning the death of a British social media influencer. ‘Uncle Ganba’ has over one million followers on the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin.
He was shot to fame after his wife, a Chinese woman, shared his preparation of simple sandwiches online. The Chinese social media users nicknamed the Western-styled dishes as “White People Food”, joking about its tastelessness while hailing its low calories. Ganba in Chinese means dry and tasteless food.
Uncle Ganba was diagnosed with cancer. When news of his death emerged on Tuesday, many social media users reposted the news, one saying “even though I didn’t know him in person, it felt like losing a close friend.”
