00:40During early August, Ukrainian forces made substantial progress with a surprise incursion

00:45into Russia's Kursk border region.

00:49In just two weeks, they gained over 1,100 square kilometers.

00:54However, this new front has stabilized, with Ukrainian advances between 1,150 and 1,300

01:01square kilometers over the past 15 days, based on the troop movement data.

01:07And now, the advance is expected to recede as even the top Ukrainian commander-general

01:12Alexander Sarsky has admitted that Kiev's major plans in Kursk have backfired.

01:19The Russian troop advanced approximately 15 square kilometers per day in August, mainly

01:24in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

01:28Most of these gains were directed towards the logistical hub of Pokrovsk.

01:33By late August, Russian forces have moved within seven kilometers of the city.

01:39Moscow's previous major territorial gain in a single month occurred back in October

01:442022, during a period when the front line was highly mobile, following a significant

01:50Ukrainian counteroffensive near Kharkiv.

01:54Since the start of 2024, Russia has expanded the control over the Ukrainian territory,

02:00which is approximately three times of the amount gained in 2023.

02:05Last year, the Russian advances were largely reversed by Ukrainian counteroffensive.

02:11Despite these gains, the Ukrainian forces have struggled to effectively counterattack.

02:15In 2024, Ukrainian troops have only managed to reclaim more territory than they lost in

02:21eight days.

02:22And these recoveries were usually limited to only a few square kilometers each day.

02:29As of September 1, Russia controls approximately 66,266 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory.

02:36This includes Crimea, annexed by Russia already in 2014, and the areas of eastern Ukraine

02:42controlled by pro-Russian separatists before the 2022 invasion.

02:48The territory claimed or confirmed by Russia now represents 18 percent of Ukraine's total

02:53area of 2013.

02:55Now, it remains to be seen what will be Russia's further course of action and how will Ukraine

03:01respond if the front line continues to collapse.
