00:00So why is Caterpillar named Caterpillar? That's the story behind it.

00:04From the late 1890s, Benjamin Holt was looking for ways to improve the performance of steam tractors,

00:10and in 1904, Holt came up with the very first successful track-type tractor prototype,

00:16but that's only the beginning of the story.

00:18During a demonstration in England the same year,

00:21a British soldier admiring the invention approached Holt and told him,

00:25your machine moves like a caterpillar.

00:28This would be the start of something that would change the world forever.

00:33Recognizing the marketing potential of the name,

00:36Holt began referring to his crawler tractors as Caterpillar tractors.

00:40The name quickly caught on and became synonymous with the machines,

00:44as two men were about to make history.

00:47In 1925, Holt Manufacturing Company merged with the CL Best Tractor Company,

00:52and when time came to pick a name, nothing sounded better than Caterpillar.

00:56And so a random name in a dictionary simply became the largest machinery brand ever.
