00:00Mosquito season is well underway. Do you know what to do if you get bitten?
00:04You might be surprised to learn that, according to HuffPost, you're not supposed to scratch the bite.
00:08Dr. Bobby Pritt, director of the Mayo Clinic's Clinical Parasitology Laboratory,
00:13told the outlet that if you scratch too hard, bacteria like staphylococcus and streptococcus
00:18that live on the skin could get into the bite and cause an infection. Instead, the Mayo Clinic
00:22recommends applying calamine lotion, a non-prescription antihistamine cream, or corticosteroid cream.
00:28You could also apply a homemade paste made out of baking soda and water. Of course, it's even
00:33better to avoid getting bitten at all, especially with recent reported cases of the eastern equine
00:37encephalitis virus. The CDC recommends preventing mosquito bites by using insect repellent and
00:43wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants. Mosquitoes suck, but with the
00:48right precautions, they usually don't have to get in the way of summer fun.
